Hey guys my car is stock (except for audio and visual) at the moment and im thinking about getting a tougher sounding exhaust.

First of all i would like to know, is the system a dual side by side system or is it just one pipe that goes into a muffler with 2 tips ?

Also with getting a tougher/louder note should i get a new exhaust or just modify the one i have now (eg: remove the rear muffler, add a hot dog, or a cannon)

If anyone could help me through this it would be appreciated

Thanks

Remove rear muffler and put straight through piping sounds really nice and tuff. I got the same setup

Does it drone much ?

Also what do you think it would sound like if i put a cannon in place of that muffler ?

Edit: Did you mean straight through pipe or replace it with a straight through muffler ?

every magna with a cannon ive seen is poo. im still yet to hear a truely angey exhaust note without the subtle notes of a stupid fart sound. the lukey on my ole 3.0L was pretty good but still not perfect, and the lukey on my 3.5L is worse still

Yeah replace the rear muffler with straight piping. Most autos have drone so u learn to put up with it. Cannon on the rear of a magna sounds good only with the centre muffler still intact if the centre muffler is removed it sounds like poo

I can't agree with this advice. Removing all mufflers is a very bad idea. Mufflers are there to muffle sound funnily enough. Without any mufflers, the volume of your exhaust system will be too loud and defectable.

Edit: Please don't bang on about how you "haven't had any problems with the Police" etc. That's like saying you haven't got an STD yet from banging hookers raw dog every day.

People reckon mine has a cannon muffler on it cos of its looks (its actually a round magnaflow muffler).....certainly doesnt sound like a "fart can"

Mine is manual.

So i will be looking at getting a 3.5l motor fitted down the track. but for the moment it would just be better if i removed a muffler rather than getting a new redback system off ebay ?

Sigh. Change your rear muffler to a Magnaflow/Powerflow etc.

The standard system is fairly good just switch out the rear muffler like Disciple said and also consider swapping the centre muffler with a hotdog.

cant get too much from that video unfortunately. Mine sounds fantastic in the car (given that its mostly induction noise is handy too), but when someone else drove my car past me I was almost embarrassed by the noise after the car passed me. granted it wasnt full throttle, but a really decent exhaust shouldnt just sound good when your flooring it.

In my opinion, magnaflow mufflers sound very nice on a manual V6 magna..... i also tried a Lukey "ultraflow" on my car once and it too sound pretty good (not quite as nice as the magnaflow though)

I should rego my car and get to a meet, so you can hear it..... i will be changing over the rear muffler to a larger oval magnaflow soon (for added ground clearance), as i change the direction with what i wanna do with the car.

he was saying, just because you got lucky and didnt have problems with the police, doesnt mean that the OP wont, shouldnt give out advice that could land someone in trouble, he should just put on a high flow muffler and be done with it, any decent exhaust shop can reccomend a good one to suit, mine even let me try a couple to see which one i prefered.

Shouldnt be anymore than 150 bucks fitted. just go to an exhaust shop and say u wanna replace your rear muffler with a high flow straight through design muffler.

This video of my borthers old TH with rear muffler replaced by a straight through design muffler

IMO go for a Lukey or similar... save yourself the extra $150 it will cost for a Magnaflow - they are a high quality muffler but expensive for what they are, and not necessary for the louder exhaust note you're looking for. I had a Magnaflow and hated it... too loud and droney... but it might be your cup of tea.

my 50c worth, change rear muffler for straight through (insert brand here, I have a D&T from my old ford) and and get a RPW Pod filter as well, this will make it sound nice from both ends and in the cabin.

depends on how loud you want it and what you can put up with.

Even better go to a meet and see what everyone's cars sound like! easy!

It all depends on what sized magnaflow you fit..... Fit a small one and yes it will be loud and drony (especially with a auto) but fit a larger body one and they are nice, deep and not too loud.

Also remember any straight thru muffler will be loudish (depending on the size of the muffler) but the better quality units will hold there internal "packing" alot longer and not degrade over time like i have found with some "local" branded mufflers.

i went with Magnaflow. Cost me $300 just for the muffler which is very expensive but i have been there and done that with cheap exhausts and it isn't worth the hassle IMO. Especially with V6's

i thought $165 was cheap enough and i pick the car up just after 4pm today. I also am getting the guy to fit a small tip of $65 he said he will shave a little bit off the bumper so it can sit higher aswell which i think will look nice.

if i want to make my exhaust even louder how do i go about doing it? Should i add a hotdog before the rear muffler, or replace the center muffler with one? Or is it just as easy as getting a straight through muffler To replace the center one?

ralliart
02-07-2010, 10:34 AM
i would just get a cat back exhaust

kurt
02-07-2010, 02:50 PM
No not really lol !

Should of replaced it with piping would of been louder. A cop isnt gonna know were mufflers are supposed to be anyways by having one less muffler. You already got a cat converter and a center muffler.
