Hi All,

I've got a 96 Magna TE, bought it 2nd had about 8 months ago. Only problem i has initially with the car was that the head lights only worked on the high beam and parking light settings. The normal headlight setting did not work. I changed out the bulbs and no difference. The problem i found was with the control fuse relay for the lights I removed one of the 3 and somehow it works. I've left that alone.

Recently, the engine warning light has come on almost every time i drive. It does not come on right way but it come on after i've been driving for a bit. Also i've noticed that sometimes the gear changes are not smooth and abit jerky. Also sometimes the engine takes abit of effort to start. It cranks for awhile but gets going. I've noticed that the initial revs are low when it just gets started.

Any advice on what i should do would be GREATLY appreciated. Also this is my first car so i'm not that well versed in auto repair.

Cheers

ECU could be detecting odd or no signal from the Idle Air Control/Valve (IAC/IAV), causing hard starts (wrong air/fuel mixture for startup). Best bet is to check the fault codes - since the Check Engine Light has come on, it has detected and logged a fault - which is a good thing.

To check for faults in the TE, you can either go to a mechanic that will hook it up to their computer and check the ECU's codes and find the offending item, or you can do it yourself and save $50-100.

Under the dash on the drivers side, close to the centre console there is an OBD-II plug for diagnostics. To use the onboard diagnostics, you have to connect pin 1 to ground (aka to any metal part of the car) and turn on the ignition (dont start the car) and watch/count the Check-Engine-Light flashes to get the code(s) pointing to the fault. If you need help with this just ask ;)

Sounds good, i'll try this out this weekend. Do you have any idea where i can get a code list or a service manual for my car?

If you search the forums, you'll find a downloadable workshop manual. I downloaded it, but find it a pain because when it installed all the linkages between the component documents don't work properly :(
I can find stuff, but its hard work...

I bought a Max Ellery manual (Code EP.M093) which covers the TR though TWs via Ebay for $46 posted. I believe Haynes may also publish a Magna manual.

Manual can be found here (http://rapidshare.com/files/101136582/magna_verada_diamante.zip), its for slightly later models but most relates to TE onwards.

If you install the old adobe and open it with that it should work. I had the same problem and this fixed it.

EDIT: the adobe it prompts you to install when you mount the image and run the installer.

Use it by opening "Ralliart_home.pdf", all menus work.
