Hey I've got a 2001 magna sports and I was looking at lighly modding it, just wondering weather extractors and maybe a new air filter would make much differance without replacing the whole exhaust system. Anyone tried it??

If you've got a TJ Sports with the single tip sports muffler then you'll get a nice gain from extractors. If you haven't got a straight through muffler then you'll need to fit one before you get the full benefit from a set of after market extractors. Others on the forum have been able to fit a nice lukey muffler for well under $300.. YMMV

yeah its the TJ sports and it does have the sports tip, I wasnt to keen on doing the exhaust as its a auto and I didnt want to make it any louder! loud exhausts on autos sound a little funny when cruising! (IMHO)

The standard 2 1/2 inch exhaust on the TJs is plenty big enough for most mods. Unless you're going to something wild like Booya's 14:1 compression insane engine, or a forced induction system, you won't need to go bigger.
As an idea, commodore owners with their 3.8L engines upgrade to a 2.5" system.. we start with one

I think all the 3.5L models come with an exhaust that is around about 2.5".. apparently it gets a little narrower around the rear suspension components though. The 3L models are a bit smaller at 2.25". Some people on here actually measured it, and it's really a metric sized exhaust not imperial but 2.5" and 2.25" are close enough. :D
As I understand it the factory exhaust manifold bolts straight on to a flex pipe just before the cat, and everything after the cat is 2.5" with mandrel bends. The catalytic converter is not very restrictive either.. I'm pretty sure Dave (Mitsiman) from RPW still runs the factory cat on his 300kW ATW twin turbo beast, but I could be wrong. Certainly there are people making nearly 150kW ATW using the standard cat without propblems.

3rd gens are 2 1/4 mandrel bent
..GONE..

3L - 2.25" Mandrel Bent Systems
3.5L - 2.5" Mandrel Bent Systems - If not Mandrel Bent.. Close to it! <-- I was told that by someone!

Dude, RPW (or any other) headers with an Autobox are still an improvement. I recommend.
And get HiFlo TB after.
Chip it when u get rich....
RPW headers are bolt on, easy to install. Others, like Pacemakers, have to be welded.
Keep the rest of the pipe, good enough.

Okay, can you fill us in on what you did or used? Did you just try the muffler or all the piping? Did stuff not line up bolt or hanger wise? Did you notice a gain over what you had? Top end gain, bottom end loss? What did you have initially?

Yeah, bring it on. I got a nice 70 min drive in front of me through twisty roads. Think I'm going to see if I can bring it down to the 60 min mark. Time to find out of my completed AWD brake upgrade is the duck nuts or not.
