Hey guys

Just looking for some advice. Out of nowhere, my right rear wheel has been squeaking at low speeds, not a constant squeak but once every wheel revolution. It goes away after I pass about 20-30km/h and then comes back when you slow down. I know it's definately the handbrake as when I pull it up a little bit the squeal is silenced.

I've taken off the disc/drum and had a good look in there last weekend... There was a lot of crap inside the drum that came out when I took it off. Had a good look inside and nothing looked damaged or anything. Spun the hub to check that wasn't the problem, and it was fine. When I put the disc back on it seemed to spin a whole lot more easier. Readjusted the brake at the drum and under the console so it locked when the handbrake is applied, and put the wheel back on. I spun it, and no squeak! Took it for a little drive. No squeak still. However coming back home after about 20 mins of driving I started to notice the squeak again. Quieter this time, but it was still there.

So, could I have adjusted the handbrake a bit too tight and the shoe is rubbing against the drum, causing the noise? I think this may have something to do with it, but if I don't tighten it enough the right wheel doesn't lock when the handbrake is on. The left one, on the other hand, works perfectly, locks up when the handbrake is on and no squeaking noise from there.

What should I do? Loosen it off some more at the drum and see if that fixes it? That would mean I'd only have one full locking wheel with the handbrake, but if this will silence the squeal I'll be happy to live with that. Anyone else had this problem before? So embarrasing at the lights/in carparks -.- Any advice would be appreciated :)

I wouldn't be embarrassed about it, a lot of cars do it, mine used too.
I fixed mine by changing the cable and brake shoes. a bit drastic but it was all worn anyway and needed to be changed.
Adjusting the right one at the hub to be alittle looser might help but I doubt it. Once mine start to make noise it never went away. But that was mine and the same side too.

I have come to the conclusion that it stems from movement of the car on the road.
Basically the car twists as it goes around corners and things move and don't quite go back where their supposed too.

Mate, mine's exactly the same and I hate it.

I have no idea but I suspect its something to do with the handbrake.

Gonna have a mech try and fix it. I don't want to be tinkering with the handbrake myself lol

Thanks for the replies guys, :D
So after a few days of driving it around with that squeak, "embarrasing" turned into a big headache every time I had to go somewhere
I got sick of it and backed it right off the other day at the drum so the wheel spins with no resistance at all and now it's stopped squeaking! :D Only problem is, that wheel now doesn't lock at all with the handbrake on. Car still holds fine on a decent slope with handbrake on (one wheel locked)/trans in park though.
Should be allright until next service where I'll get it looked at by a mech and most probably end up getting the shoes replaced :P

Hello, Hello.
I'm hoping to revive this thread, I also have a left hand rear squeak just as described. I pulled the disc off cleaned and adjusted. Reduced the noise for some time, but it has come back. My wife is the main driver of the car and I finally hear the noise properly on the weekend, it is quite loud, below 20km/ph. The shoes probably have years (till we change cars) of life left in them. Any hints.
Does anyone know how much new shoes cost? I priced discs on the weekend and they were $77 each with a RACQ discount at Repco. Just replaced the brake pads on the weekend so I know it is the handbrake.
Any magic cures? Unfortunately I have lost my wand recently.

I has this issue. Put the disc/drum on with 3 nuts to pull it up. Pull the caliper off so that pads don't drag. Back the handbrake cable right off inside the car. Then adjust the shoes so the disc just spins freely, then back it off a further 5 clicks. Then adjust the handbrake cable so that it holds the car on a hill (pulling on the handbrake with 20kg of force should see it move 3-5 clicks).

I've got the same problem, it seems to be quite common. The sound is quite bs. I may just get new pads, but give them some tlc before i decide anything.

Wow time fly's, I have been meaning to get on and post a confirmation to the great simple fix for handbrake squeak. I followed Jimbo's advice, I didn't take the whole caliper off (that would be going too far) I did back the handbrake right off inside and did the rest and WOW, noise is gone, wife is happy, I am happy. Have not heard a noise for the last two months at least.

Hi, I tried taking off the disc. Bit hard, so I loosened it and moved it out slightly with 2x 12 mm bolts in supplied holes,( need to buy a brake adjusting tool.) I put the garden water hose into the gap to wash out the dust. (Known to make brakes squeal). Just took it for a test drive. So far so good. Don't know if this is a long term fix. Will report back if I have anymore "bright idea's." Oh yes! Do not do this with air hose. Some brake material has still got asbestos in it. Maybe a little high melting point grease in the brake shoe saddle to stop shoe sticking.Need to take drum/disc off for this.
