I have an annoying problem with the manual box. I am not sure what the problem is, but pressing the accelerator and coming off it causes the car to rock quite badly backwards and forwards, almost like a mount is buggered. From what I can see, all the mounts appear fine though. I think the CV's are on the way out, as there was brown grease around the whole joint. Would bad shafts and CVs cause this bad rocking motion?

It may just be the mounts. a buggered mount is hard to see as the rubber bush within the mounts would be torn apart

Hay mate

My old TH with the heavy duty clutch had this problem and yes it was the cvs they can do this. Or it might be bushes or wheel bearing but most likey your cvs

Sounds like the front engine mount. It probably won't appear rooted as VRX257 said, but once off you will see the damage.

the front drivers mount is polycarbonate and looks to be in good nick still, as expected. I will try and get a better look at the other ones this weekend. If it's not them I will get new CV's and shafts soon.

These solid mounts can cause issues similar to these

Remember the front and rear mounts are not mounts, they should have NO load on them at all. These are purely roll stop mounts

Check the mount on the gearbox end, if this has sagged then there will be extra load on the roll stop mounts and again, these will collapse and cause this due to the engine rocking way too much

Inner joints will often seep grease due to the rubber on the boot compressing, this is quite common, check for excessive play in the shaft
