Keeping up the polishing may slow down the growth of your paint cancer, but if it's already begun, it's only going to get worse.

If your fuel economy on cruising sorts of trips isn't what it used to be, and your oxygen sensor hasn't been changed in at least 100000km, the oxygen sensor may be starting to fail (richening the mixture, which can cause the cat to generate the smell, if I understand correctly). If the drving is more varied and spirited/harder, so that the ECU spends more time in open loop mode, the oxygen sensor is less likely to be an issue.

Should have kept it coated in wax from the start.
Keeping it out of the sun as much as you can also helps

You may have an oil leak causing the oil to burn off the exhaust system, this is common especially on the rear bank

Mines doing the same thing! :( This last summer has done loads of damage! And I waxed the car every few weeks (2 or 3) and polished a couple of times.... :( I also read online that polishing actually takes a little paint away so polishing might not be such a great idea... might be why mine has gone so bad... :(

thrashing unleaded produces a rotten egg smell. This may be what your smelling. All cars do it

It all depends. Some polishes are 'abrasive' and are designed to remove minute amounts of paint, others aren't. Hand polishing isn't going to remove much paint. You're looking at a serious paint correction by machine to remove any measurable amount of clear coat, and even then, as a rare event, it's not really worth worrying about. I doubt there's any correlation in your circumstances.
