View Full Version : TPS switch- Unusual Gearbox behaviour - Broken connector

Ok, this is a combination of a TPS replacement gone wrong & ongoing Auto trans issues ( MMAL Third Box replacement).
I was suppose to have a new TPS installed but the wrong parts arrived(original put back in) and since they worked on the car my gearbox behaves weird when I throttle off and coast in gear. It appears from what I am feeling is that the Damper clutch or Torque convertor clutch is either not releasing or grabbing just at the point before the dead stop where the throttle would rest at idle. To me it feels it's happening as the internal micro switch in the TPS switches on to indicate idle position. At this point the you can feel and see the RPM drop suddenly as if there is a brake being placed on the engine. This happens for a second or 2 then you feel a sudden release and the RPM rise back up to where it should be. I can also replicate this if i come back on the throtle very slowly and reach the same throtle position as if the switch goes off to indicate it's no longer at idle. Same symptons , RPM dives and then rises suddenly. It's not an engine flat spot and like I say feels kind of like a hydraulic lock in the TC or transmission.
Has anyone had some first hand experience of this problem?
What I am concerned with is whether it's a maladjusted TPS or an issue in the gearbox itself because this is their third attempt of supplying a serviceable gearbox.
On a separate issue I've just discovered that the clowns at the dealership have broken the TPS connector shell by not removing the locking clip prior to removal. I'm expecting them to both deny this and accuse me of breaking this. Anyone have any experience with replacing these both how and where to get a replacement if I'm hung out to dry on this?

Short of going to an automotive electrical suppliers like ashdown ingram, best bet would be to cut another plug (with wire) off another 3rd gen, and transfer the good plug over by taking the pins out and re-inserting them into the plug you got from the cut off loom (wreckers eh)
Ashdown will probably sell a replacement plug but they are not cheap (about $10) although they do come with new pins.
Might be an idea while the TPS is still on the car to hook up a multimeter and see what it reads. I would try another TPS..

Thanks, If it's only $10 I'll be happy assuming they carry such a plug.
My car has 2 sensors due to TCL. The manual states APS (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR) which is the one on the cable side & TPS (THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR) which is on the opposite side for the traction control. I called it TPS as that is what most would know of it by. When they were reading the codes I was told it was an APS fault indicated which means the back one which you can tell has been touched and where the connector is broken. The paperwork says TPS on order so I hope they know what they're doing. I suspect it was possibly reinstalled roughly without setting up the idle switch clearance correctly. I really hope that's what causing this weird throttle off behaviour with the gearbox, I've had a gut full of replacement transmissions.
I really can't risk playing with it myself as it's an outstanding WTY job even though it expired 28 June, and the gearbox has been ongoing from March.

Ah, the fly by wire setup as required for the traction control. Adds a whole new dimension to what can go wrong as the car ages. lol I better get up to speed on this before I buy a car with TCL. Good luck getting it sorted. Ihope your gearbox acting up is solely caused by the relevant computers being confused by the sensor inputs acting up.

I'm starting to think this car is possessed by the devil, I'm totally jinxed. When you say fly by wire I thought that refers to cars which no longer rely on a throttle cable and are totally electronic. Mine is still cable driven but with 2 throttle sensors and the traction control/cruise control are actuated by vacuum controls attached to the throttle. I'm back to having a little diff whine with this box but the shifts are so smooth especially the kick downs it's by far the best box to date. I am however totally spooked by this unusual behaviour when I throttle off.

Like I said, I need to get up to speed on these TCL systems. lol Seems there are different ways of doing this . . . .

Maybe you shouldn't bother. Save you from some of the heartaches.Sometimes I think car makers should apply KISS (keep it simple, stupid) "The KISS principle states that simplicity should be a key goal in design, and that unnecessary complexity should be avoided." Nice when it's all working, pain to fix. These forums can be good therapy, I'm trying to laugh this one off:facejump:

Problem solved. Issue was caused by a "Faulty" technician. Incorrect adjustment of the Throttle sensor/switch. They made the same mistake twice with the old and new sensor fitted. Only got sorted when I asked them to connect the MUT and do a data record whilst I drove the car. When they looked at what all the sensors were reading it was very clear the idle switch and sensors were not in the right position.
The Tech was quite sheepish when he said it was out. In fact he said it was out a long way.
Pity thay did not look at closer when I suggested that they may have made a mistake with the adjustment weeks ago.
