View Full Version : TS Head - need some help on assembly
Hi, sent a TS head off to get reconditioned, and got back a small back with the hydraulic lifters and an oil seal with a partly assembled head.
Now all they seem to have done, besides face and clean the head, is to install new valve stem seals, reinstall the valves, and seat the cam shaft in with the rocker arms etc on, but not screwed down.
Can someone direct me which end and how to install this oil seal, and let me know if there is a special way to install these hydraulic lifters?
I can loosen the screws off the arms, and slide them in under each (with the holes pointing up), and torque down, but is that all there is to it??
Any help would be great.

Did you get back the original lifters or were they new ones? Always a good idea to use new ones, either way they need to be filled with oil before they are put into the rocker arms.

seal question is hard without a picture of the type of seal
lifters.... holes facing up into the rockers
the hardened surface runs on the cams

Got back the old lifters in a bag along with the camshaft oil seal.

Seems all i have to do then, is oil the seal and slide to somewhere under the end cap (manual doesnt show where, but its on the water pump side) and then apply some sealant under that cap. Then pop the lifters under into the rockers as mentioned.
Tighten all down and should be good...?
Bumping this as i didnt get an answer.
Can someone tell me which way round the camshaft oil seal goes on? I think it goes on the water pump pulley end...

There is only on seal on a 2.6 head, it goes on the end of the cam at the water pump end. Seal goes in with the lip inwards. Flat side out towards the water pump. (As it was when you pulled it out. Look for a shiny ring on the cam where the lip of the old seal sat.)
Make sure you fill the lifters with oil first. If they are the originals examine them for wear and pump down. Also lube the camshaft and rockers with engine oil.
Torque the bolts down to the right torque.

Howdy .. i'm a newbie but i did my cam seals 2 days ago
there are two cam seals ..one on each cam .. they are large rubber rings .. they go behind the camshaft sprockets and the thin backing plates ..
I replaced mine wihtout taking the rockers off ... so took timing belt off, removed camshaft sprockets, prised out old seals with sharp spike, oiled the new ones and pushed them in with a piece of plastic pipe
the writing on the seals is on the outside of the motor
should have done the crank seal as well as that is also leaking now ..ha..ha

Yup one seal. Thanks for the help. Had the head sent away like i mentioned and got it back from being skimmed, acid dipped and rebuilt, all except the lifters and seal put on...so it just needs bare assembly. The lifters were examined and were new ones that were only put in a while ago, so came back in a sealed bag oiled up. Ive got the manual here, but it doesnt show that step of the seal. It does go through how to bleed the lifters and start the car etc to pump them up.
You wouldn't happen to know the bolt torque for the cam cap bolts would you?

19 nm for the rocker cap bolts
no more or you will strip the thread
head bolts sequence and torque in NM
should be on the gasket set
