Hey everyone, i picked up a cheap set of 380 gt rims, and i am wondering if i am able to put 245/45 tyres on them without compromising drivablity and making the tyres scrub. my car is already lowered on lovvels super lows.

thanks

Speedo is out by 2.4% so it will be slower then the speedo reading

thanks but would it compromise handleing, i am guessing it would due to the fact that there would be more side wall flex...

Yep, 245/45 is illegal on a 7" rim. Widest that's legal on a 7" rim is 225. I think you'd have to go at least a 7 1/2", possibly 8" rim before 245 wide is legal.

yeah but what are the implications to the car? everyone on 3si seems to think it will handlr fine...

Even 235s on a 7" rim isn't recommendable. No way would I go 245s - 215s or 225s would be the way to go.

Depends on what you define as 'handling' fine. Yes, it'll drive, but sidewall flex would get pretty severe when pushed, and I doubt they'd wear evenly.

Not sure how you'd go with fitting either. Plenty of people have run 245 wide tyres before, but that's with aftermarket rims. The stock Mitsubishi alloys are offset pretty far into the guards so I would be worried that they may foul on the suspension components.

many run 235/45 on a 17 inch 7inch wide rim, but 245 is waaaay too wide. 235 is borderline, with some manufacturers allowing it like Michelin (as well as most tyre shops offering it as a replacement size for 225/50)

245/45 is just too much though, the handling would suffer and would almost certainly make your car unroadworthy (not sure why people are using the term illegal...)

Dave, 235 on a 7" wide is illegal, 235's are rated for 7.5 minimum, most tyre places won't do it...

stop using the word illegal!! There is a difference to being unroadworthy

What do you think Defect notices are? They are PENELTIES ($80 something a pop) for breaking the law, by driving an unroadworthy car.

i guess illegal = unlawful = against the law.
it is the road rules (laws, example: "hoon laws") to drive an unroadworthy car. but it doesnt really matter.

i am getting these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-235-45-17-TYRES-GOODYEAR-F1-/250656081409?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a5c444601), subject to postage cost. i rang today and they have a few left in stock. bargin really, apparrently they are the best wet weather tyres, and that perfect for where i live

edit: to save opening another thread, what are the widest tyres to put on 15X6 inch rims for the drag strip, not street driving. thanks

225mm is the MAXIMUM width tyre to run on a 7" rim, unless you enjoy crap handling/grip under hard cornering and uneven/accelerated tyre wear. Personally I would prefer to run a 215mm tyre on 7" for a bit more sidewall stiffness.
