as I am non mechaniclly minded female I will try and explain the probs as best I can.
I have a aug 92 tr magna efi that developed auto trans prob.
1. trans made a thud noise when changing from 3- 4 th gears then went into what seemed to be limp mode, turned car off and restarted drove fine for 2 more days then did it again and stayed in limp mode, took it to mechanic who said 2nd and 4 th bands stuffed in trans, expensive repairs any thing from $500-$2000.
2. got tr trans for my model car from wreckers, mechanic put in computer did not recognise trans, told my car was in 2month period where mitsi was putting tp trans in tr magnas so I needed a tp trans.
3. got tp trans from wreckers mechanic put in worked fine for 1 day then went into limp mode again disconected battery to reset comp worked fine again for a couple of short trips up the local shops then went into limp mode again disconected bat again overnight made no difference still in limp mode.
I really need any help or advise anyone can offer this is starting to get very expensive.

Thanks for that advise, but the reason I didnt get the original trans looked at was the trans specialist could not tell me how much the repairs would be until they opened it up and if it needed more than just the 2 gears fixed and was going to be big $$$ I dont have that kind off money spare,Im hopeing someone else has had a similar prob and can maybe offer a solution.

This car is gunna drive me round the twist,no change to the way the trans drove first up this morning after dissconnecting the battery overnight, but just had to go out and the trans is changing perfectly again,????????Im confused,I really need some input into what the problem might be.any ideas
It could be a problem with the transmission computer as well. It may be shorting out. I had an
incident a while ago where the alternator was on its way out (it was spiking) and everytime it
spiked, it caused the transmission to go into limp mode. This only happens when I am slowing
down. Did not realise the trans problem was caused by the alternator until I got the alternator
replaced and the trans problem never happened again. They had the car for 5 days trying to figure out why the trans was going to limp mode. Went back to the dealer to tell them and
they were beweildered.
yeah im no expert, but if two auto boxes r showing the same symptons then I reckon it is probably somthing electrical or computer. What r the chances of a reckon box and yours having the same probs.Get advise off an auto electrician(flutter your eyes abit).:D

I doubt it's the box to be honest. I also have a Aug 92 TR auto EFi and just had the gearbox serviced the other day. Things are damn solid compared to the earlier boxes.
Are you using the right type of fluid ?
What's the story with you kickdown servo switch ? More likely this fails than a whole band.
Throttle position senors are used by the gearbox and are notorious for failure. This WILL have an impact on shifting.
Has your mechanic run diagnostics on the computer yet? What codes is he getting?
I'd check these things first. Also wreckers generally have a "if it don't work replace warranty", follow this up.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your input, just thought I'd give you an update,I still hate my car, mechanic took pan off my cars original trans and it was full of metal shavings, not good.
THURS,mechanic could not get his diagnostics to read computer, the comp would not give any readings, off to the auto electrician on monday.
SAT,disconnected battery and had it out of limp mode again, drove up the local shop and BINGO the trans computer fried itself.
WED,new trans computer, still dont feel like its driving properly, getting mechanic to check it out tommorow to see what he thinks.
THIS IS ONE EVIL CAR I THINKS ITS POSSESSED

I wish,na cant afford to, plus already upto bout $1500 trying to fix this problem up,so may as well see it through, just getting a bit frustrated with all of it,for the last month all I seem to do is pour money into it and only had it on the road for a total of bout 2 days, but I did love my car before all of this,is a great car to drive, driven a few other peoples cars while mine was out of action and would prefer mine to other makes of the same vintage, see what mechanic thinks, maybe it needs some adjustments or still relearning drive patterns, who knows????

This won't help you but yeah the auto's are a bit of a *****. The manual 2.6L's are very strong and have few mechanical problems and are really a good cheap car to run with little costs. I would probably just sell your car and get a manual TR because I mean sure it cost you $1.5k already but it may cost you another $1.5k you just don't know. I would try to get as much of your money back as possible from the things that didn't work and sell it. You can get the 4 cylinder TR manuals for $1500 - $2000 and a V6 TR you could get for $3500.

I guess I will see what my mechanic has to say tomorrow,we really hav'nt had much of a chance to test out the trans we put in it from the wreckers due to the computer putting it in to limp mode, but it seemed to be running good for the first day???and yeah if its a prob with the trans I can send it back, Dont suppose any of you guys that are doing auto-manual conversions have a tp trans that was in good running order
