Have made an excellent discovery for anybody wanting to scan engine parameters, diagnose and reset trouble codes, log data etc.on the 380 without spending hundreds of dollars.
You need to get yourself one of these...no really! Even if you are just mildly curious.

This little puppy cost me $30 US delivered from honkers and arrived in Oz only four days after sale.. and the important bit... it works like charm.
Plug this baby straight into the OBD2 port and connect to it over bluetooth from your phone or laptop and all your 02 sensor, MAF, AIT, Ignition advance etc is there to be logged and monitored.
As far as the software goes, don't bother with the stuff that it comes with the device just yet, they have a lot of COM port limitations for modern operating systems (actually bluescreened my Laptop trying to crowbar the drivers in and had to restore it. Get yourself a copy of OBD2007 lite, which will offer to install the neccessary drivers to run the thing from Windows (these guys are local, have a Vic phone number and this SW worked immediately).
There is other software that will work also:
I'm currently monitoring the engine with an old unused Nokia 6220 that has bluetooth built in. If you have a phone with Symbian OS, download OBDScope. This fully functional trial lasts 7 days , but only costs about 10 euro if you want to permanently activate it, which is more than fair
Wow! I hear you say! what a guy! He didn't even buy ten of these and sell them to the forum members for $80 each with the software, tried and tested to work with the 380!... I know , I know,... I am just one man, but I like to think that I can make a difference in a world of blah blah blah.. <gets bored with monologue already and back to the point>
I've already seen quite a few interesting trends (such is intake air temperature doubling over ambient due to heat soak after only 45 mins of driving) I'm now about to embark on the logging exercises needed to intercept and tune the airflow meter interceptor I built over the weekend:facejump:, (see this thread for details: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79712&p=1276090#post1276090)

Thanks for that. Just bought one! Cant go wrong for that price. Is there a version that works on Windows mobile? I am using a HTC hd2, would be nice to use that. Otherwise no biggy. I work at a mobile phone company, I can scrounge an old symbian with bluetooth for nothing.

Sorry no, designed for the symbian OS only. Actually there are heaps more apps like this for pocket PC's/winmobile and Android devices than there are for symbian, so you should have no trouble finding an equivalent. You can even try OBD2007 mentioned above in the pocket PC version : http://www.glmsoftware.com/ScreenshotsPPC.aspx
You can also go the Bluetooth enabled laptop route (but do go with my advice of installing obd2007 lite and the drivers from this first if you've got Windows 7, the included drivers probably work a lot better on XP or VISTA).
I would start with a trial of OBD2007, then also try OBDGuage for pocket PC (free) :
http://www.pocketgear.com/en/usd/3155881,product-details.html?M2DPId=101224
Also OBDKey: http://www.obdkey.com/obd_software.asp#Software included for Windows Pocket PC (PDA, Mobile) included for Windows Pocket PC (PDA, Mobile), and this: http://www.autoenginuity.com/downloads.shtml
If I come across any other good looking interfaces for Windows mobile , I'll post them

Yeh, cept jaycar don't sell this anymore, and the closest equivalent is the silicon chip kit sold by autronics which costs around $150, adn still requires a laptop
...and they even have an OBD app in the Android Market for my phone.
SOLD!

Well I better make sure i don't lose the one I bought from them then....LOL
This gadget also doesn't need a laptop...about the same price of a Tom Tom gps...just with more features.

Yes...I do have one....it even has racetrack gps maps for when you want to time yourself at events.

Hmmmm .. thanks for the input, but I suspect that $469 is probably out of most peoples price range on this forum (certainly mine)
The Symbian app above cost me $15 to register and the device was about $39 AUS delivered, no wires and also logs everything to .csv files so I can graph and manipulate every bit of data in excel later for when I get bored watching the gauges all the time. $50 compared to $469 is a big jump by comparison for similar functionality . If I was going to go down the all-in-one tool path I'd probably be inclined to get a Scanguage II delivered for about $189 in Oz at the moment, looks like a nifty little unit , and has add-on gauges.
actually there is also a racetrack app out there for the symbian also, but I don't really need it, as I use my iphone for this stuff.
About my only gripe with the above bluetooth unit is that there is no way to turn it off, and I don't know how much power it draws when the car is off (light stays on , on the unit) so I'm too scared to leave it plugged in. No big deal I guess, but a minor inconvenience
Stupid question time: Where the hell is the OBD port on the 380?
I've looked under the dash and can't see anything! I must be blind!

Blind :)
nah, it's up next to the foot rest , stick your head up there of use a mirror , you'll see it...

haha thanks!
maybe they forgot to put yours in! could be you're running a carby LOL!
I find it easiest by just feeling around under the far left hand driver side of the dash for the right shaped bit of plastic, right up near the centre console (to bloody far to bend down every time I want to plug / unplug the above device)

Does this work on a series 3 TJ?
BradGT
22-08-2010, 06:00 PM
if the TJ has an OBD port , i can't see why not.
i've got my OBD2 all setup now running through my Car PC in the 380 , you get some decent data out of it...
speed , RPM , intake air temp , coolant temp , timing advance , MAF sensor flow , throttle position etc etc.....pretty cool...
im not using the OBD module advertised in this thread , but it would be the same really...

Yep, it'll work, just not the same as the BT scanner.
This one is very similar to the Jaycar OBD2 scantool which I have, which works a treat. I also have one of the other gadgets, but the USB version rather than the BT version, and it also works a treat on my 380. The BT scanner (or the USB version) has a lot more functions and will display a lot more things than the one you have linked to, but of course you need to connect it to a laptop which can be a bit tiresome. The simpler but more expensive scanner is self contained with it's own read out screen, but pretty much all it does is show you diagnostic error codes and allow you to clear them. So your choice, but both should work on any 3rd gen.

Sorry but new to this forum
Where is the OBD11 port located in the 380?
I am considering the Garmin "ecoRoute HD" adaptor that will bluetooth the OBD info to my 1390 Garmin Nuvi

Hi,
Thanks for the info on this RG.
I got one of these OBT2 scanners ( Ebay OBT2 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370455839583&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT) ) same as yours. I have added it to bluetooth devices & OBD 2007 auto discover found it (on the laptop). All good so far.
But when I hit connect the Ascii data response shows;
Interface – ELM327 v1.2a
Vehicle Voltage – 11.6V
Scan tool manufacturer – SCANTOOL.NET LLC
SEARCHING...
UNABLE TO CONNECT
& then keeps repeating the same message
Interface – ELM327 v1.2a
Vehicle Voltage – 11.6V
Scan tool manufacturer – SCANTOOL.NET LLC
SEARCHING...
UNABLE TO CONNECT
"UNABLE TO CONNECT" It seems something is not right. It's the same with ignition on or off.
Although it is reading “Vehicle Voltage – 11.6V”.. strange.
Any ideas what's going wrong?
I notice when I plug the BDB2 scanner into the OBT2 port on the scanner the red led comes on (& stays on) followed by each of the other leds flashing on & off in quick succession, then it's just the red led on permanently.
Is this the normal indication on a working scanner?
I'm thinking the red led may be indicating the scanner is faulty?
Perhaps I need to make a warranty claim on the scanner ?
Thanks for any help with this.

Hi Again
I have had no success getting any output form my port
Have tried with OB2 Bluetooth afrom eBay
With iPhone cable and "Dash Command" app for iPhone
With Garmin EcoCable and 1390 Garmin
Have confirmed Garmin works OK with different vehs (landrover and Outlander)
Does any know if the installation of the LPG conversion is the cause of no OBD2 output?
Cheers

iPhone doesn't support Bluetooth Serial profile, which is what is needed. Hopefully they finally provide full Bluetooth support some time.
