i know we have all seen 100's of pictures of the good old magnas but i think this car is in quite good all original nick for a car of its age. only thing is the hatch and LHF door have been resprayed and there is one ding on the LHR door where some idiot run into it in the car park at the supermarket. there are a few scratches as can be expected but all in all its pritty good. what would a rough price be? its got 210,000 and smokes due to valve stem seals.

It certainly looks better than average. Unfortunately 1st gens are hard to sell and prices low. Registered and with a RWC, $1,500 is just about tops. Unregistered and with work to do, say $800 max. and that's optimistic. I know that's disappointing but I'm not trying to knock them as I have two myself.
The annual roadworthy check in most states makes it uneconomical to re-register old cars unless they are in top condition or you have a friendly mechanic. Some garages basically use the roadworthiness requirements as blackmail to create work for themselves. Not that I condone running unroadworthy vehicles but sometimes it is ridiculous, For example, I was quoted $1,200 to fix an oil leak just because there was some old oil and dirt on the bottom of the engine. It doesn't use oil and doesn't drip but being a 21 year old car it is not spotless.
Also many people prefer to buy from a dealer. Car dealers have associates that can provide an RWC, so the buyer can drive off with a cheap, registered vehicle, run it until the rego runs out and then dump it and do the same again. Don't forget that the prices on windscreens in car yards are only asking prices. Cash buyers can usually get at least $1,000 off. Check the prices regularly on eBay and Trading Post and you'll notice that 1st gens just don't sell if their price is much more than $1,000 unless they are exceptional. Many go for just a few hundred dollars. There are a few listed at unrealistic prices but they've been there for months.
If I were you, I'd fix the valve stem seals and keep it. If you do the work yourself, that will only cost about $100 ($40 for the seals, $20 for rocker cover gasket and $40 for a spring compressor tool). It makes a huge difference.

thanks guys, i have seen allot worse out there when it comes to first and especially second gens!
i dont plan on selling it just i was wondering what it was worth considering its pretty clean. im debating weather to buy a mates second gen and stick the motor and tranny from that in as they are both in very good condition. if not will take the engine out in before it gets transfered into my name (currently belongs to my neighbor but he is giving it to me so he doesn't have to pay rego) and give it a birthday. i plan to take the head off and do all the valve stem seals, head gasket, timing chain then replace all the gaskets on the engine and tranny. i might as well replace the tranny filters and do the kick down servo while its out i suppose as it seems they are nothing but trouble. can anyone suggest anything else to do to the engine / tranny / car its self while its all apart?
the front shockers have an audible hiss when you push down on the front of the car hard so do you think they will knock them back when it come to road worthy. otherwise i think it may be a good idea to replace the cv and steering boots so they look neat and tidy with no signs of leaks.
thanks allot
regards jay
