View Full Version : Can stiffer springs improve ride?

Hi, it's been a while.
I've had Koni adjustables on the car for several years now. (Standard springs, Whiteline rear sway bar and 225/50/17's). On smooth tarmac the ride is good. On Brisbane's appalling broken stuff it's not. Bumps and bangs come through the car over sharp bumps. Have done since new suspension went in.
I'm looking to see if anyone has had Koni's on standard springs and then put stiffer springs in and noticed an improvement in ride (as opposed to handling). Or is most of the pothole stuff mainly due to the low profile tyres?
Maybe I'd be better spending my time petitioning Brisbane City Council to re-surface the roads?
Cheers

Sorry to say, but there really is no inbetween.
You really only have 2 options...
a low car with stiff suspension that will handle well, however, the trade off is crap ride quality.
or
a stock height car with stock suspension, the ride quality will be superb, but the trade off is crap handling.
Low profile tyres will make it more noticeable when driving through large ruts or potholes. This is because there is much less sidewall flex in the tyre, so that excess shock is sent up into the car.

Sounds like a combination of low profile tyres combined with your koni's.. Koni's are generally pretty heavily damped shocks as they are designed with performance in mind. Tyres are low profile but not so low that you should feel every crack in the bitumen!
Maybe soften the shocks a bit, it should make a bit of difference.. I had koni's a few years back but they were only adjustable on the rebound, which won't help smoothen the ride much unfortunately..
Stiffer springs will exaggerate the ride you currently have. Sell your Koni's and go for Boge's for improved comfort.

Not totally correct Al. If the spring rates are done properly (progressive rate normally work well on a street car) then the koni's are a damn good strut/shock.
The stiffer, lowered TMR road and track springs i have put in my evo have improved the harsh ride that the car had with the stock springs and have also improved the handling. They are porgressive rate, tapered wire springs front and rear.
Yeah, maybe i shoudve said "run of the mill stiff springs".....so what do you recommend for the OP?

Mine is running on Lovell lows with KYB shocks.
Quite rough on the bumps, I actually prefer to feel the bumps it makes me feel like I have more control rather than the chasis bouncing and rolling all over the place.
Overall the bumpiness is only noticed on the roads with tons of repairs.
