For the last month or so, the Verada's been making an odd whining noise. At first I thought it was the transmission, but always thought it sounded like it was coming from the passenger side. On closer inspection, it appears to be coming from the engine. There's also a noticeable misfire, but I attributed that to the plugs and distributor.

Warning: Lifter Tick.

Generally, that's not the kind of sound you want to hear. I couldn't pinpoint its exact location, but I'm leaning toward the vicinity of the heads and camshafts. Perhaps my hearing deceives me though.

All fluids are looking good, oil is a bit dark but isn't black, transmission fluid is at an optimum level and doesn't smell burned. I don't know what to look for or what to expect. Perhaps it's a non-issue. Any ideas?

Are you sure its not the alternator?

Try using a piece of hose like a stethoscope to better locate where the noise is coming from.

:Stoopid: or a long screwdriver....
Probably a pulley, good way to check is, take off an accessory belt, start the car, if it's gone you know its attributed to that belt.

Forgive my knowledge on the SOHC 12v but the 1st gelt is the A/C belt and the 2nd belt is the P/S and Alternator belt correct? If you have none of the belts on and it still makes this noise, then you know its engine related. :) GL

I'll take a look at it the next chance I get. I sure as hell hope it's something relatively simple, barely have enough cash to put fuel in it at the moment and yet I still need to get to and from work. I'll see how it goes and report back if there's any more info. :)

Well, could just be a case of an overlooked part. The noise is coming from the vicinity of the engine, particularly the timing belt side, particularly the power steering pump. lol Checked the power steering fluid and it's on minimum. Guess i'll top it up and see what happens.
