Hey guys, let me start out by saying I am not a very car savvy type of guy. That being said, I do have a willingness to learn.

I have just bought a 1998 tf magna. Car was roadworthied today, having a few tyres changed, cv? Joints replaced and a few minor things.

Anyway my problem is, when I get up near 100 the car starts to shudder a bit and by the time I hit 140, it becomes unbearable. Is there an obvious cause for this? How to fix, and price estimate? Please use easy words! Haha..

Thanks guys,
Kane.

Welcome to the club mate!

1, I would not be going around saying that you were 140 on here mate... i dont think anywhere in australia that there is a public road that allows 140km/h. so its VERY illegal.

2, Is the suddering when accelerating or just rolling??

take it to your local bob jane (or other tyre shop) and get a wheel balance and alignment. Will cost $50-70. The wobble is because one (or more) of your wheels isnt balanced properly, and as it spins faster, it wobbles around. The balance is really all you need doing, but it doesnt hurt getting an alignment done at the same time.

140 on private property is ok, right? :p
Even when rolling, thanks for the advice. ;)

Ffeeky, thanks for that. I thought it would be something like that but not knowing exactly what a balance and alignment was, I didn't want to make a fool of myself. Haha.

Yea most likely its the wheel balance, costs about $5-9 per wheel to do. Its quite important to see if the shudder is happening no matter what once you got past 100 i. rolling or accelerating? or does it shudder when you hit accelerator? If it shudders no matter what then its your wheel balancing (most likely), if only under acceleration could be due to worn out cv joints (unlikely since you changed yours recently)

If it is not wheel balance, I can look after you with Brand New drive shafts

Can be shafts, wheel balance, out of round tyre or wheel bearings.

On the roadworthy, it has been noted that the drive shafts were noisy, but was told they were ok?? If they are the problem, is that a roadworthy item? Is there much work changing them? And how much is it worth to buy them + replace?

Thanks for all the help so far..!

i had this problem too, at first it would only do it under acceleration, so i changed the passenger side cv shaft, and fixed the acceleration part, then it would do it constantly, so i changed the drivers cv shaft and its all fixed and smooth.

i think there about $100-$140 per drive shaft new plus installation. mine are doing the same as yours and around the same speed, but i put it down to uneven tyrewear,my drive sharfts were done at 155,000kms and the tyres were balanced when i rotated the tyres at 180,000kms i am on 190.000kms at the moment, i wish i had forked out for a wheel alignment now, probly could of got another couple of thousand k's, but oh well..

i think the shudder is actually the bonnet wobbleing as i put a whole new suspension( springs and shocks ) brakes ( pads and rotors ) rims and tyres on 12 monts ago and still shudders
shaun at phillcom checkd it all out was ok

just spent anouther 3 grand doing a full service 4 weeks ago everything was fine still shudders

once you get up to speed have alook where the bonnet is next to the front guard you will see it sitting up

had a good chance to test it out driving to darwin ( 130kph speed limit ) was scared to go much faster as the bloody thing felt like it was about to fly off

+1 on the CV joint. same thing happened to me.

Bonnets will not cause shudders through the whole car unless they are about to fall off alltogether.

The shafts, I do brand new Japanese made shafts for $140 each, allow $30 per side for fitting.

I keep them in stock, am happy to have a look at your current shafts and give you an opinion as to if the shafts you have currently could be the cause

when i was 17 my vl use to do this at 200kph ,turned out to be a lose bolt, scary shiz...

I really hope this was just a typo however at 100 a bonnet causing a complete car to shake would be highly unusual

Madmagna.. I was thinking about getting some nice wheels put on anyway, with brand new tyres.. So Im thinking I will do that, have it balanced and aligned, and if that doesn't work, I'll look at the shafts. Is there any reason not to do this?

Btw.. I have my partners original magna (accident damaged) that I can swap parts from, any advantage in swapping the tyres straight up and checking again?

My mates car shudders at higher speeds because the chassis is bent because it was in a crash....just a thought.
