Hey everyone,
We are building a new sound system for the Brother in Law. For the source, we went looking for a sub $500 unit to run the current system which consists of:
Vibe BlackAir 6
Vibe Spacebox 4
Sony P5 sub ( to be replaced with Vibe Space 12 ).
After 5 minutes of searching , we settled on the Eclipse unit as it was by far the best value for money. I am disappointed that Pioneer and Alpine have such poor offerings in this price range.
The main features include:
Bluetooth ( Phone and music )
Ipod Direct
USB
AUX IN
3 Pairs 5V outputs
7 band parametric EQ
Time Alignment
Independent Front / Rear / Sub Xovers variable ( 6, 12, 18 , 24db / oct for all )
Giant Mute button
Easy to use menu
ESP security
First thoughts is that it is not the prettiest source unit I have ever seen, however, as my bro in law pointed out, it almost looks like a stock one - that is good.
Never having owned an Eclipse ( and not reading the manual ), I found the menu's very easy to navigate and was in and out of everything with any issues. The menu didn't like to be pushed too quickly, but it is not unbearable. I only had time to play with it for 30minutes but the sound was very clean and was a delight to tune, even if I didn't have a lot of time.
Ipod control is much better than the 2 year old Alpine we have that is supposed to have direct Ipod control. Finding songs wasn't hard, but can take a while if you have big playlists, not many genres etc. It probably has a search function - didn't get to that bit.
For the sub $500, other offerings start to introduce high voltage outputs, Bluetooth, 3 pre outs but none have 7 band parametric EQ ( most have 3 ) or Time Alignment or variable 3 way Xovers with the option of 24db / oct slopes.
With the street price coming in at well under $450, if you are after a unit that doesn't have a colour screen and a giant wa%k factor, this has everything including the kitchen sink.
