i always wondered if there was a common occurance with gen 1 magna's as i have owned 2 of them 1 of which i still drive now that my gen 3 is terminal and is sitting in the garage waiting to be looked at by hubby.

my 1990 TP sedan auto
the power steering fluid leaks not so bad in the start but is way worse now i have to fill it once a week .
and has always had the problem that the fuel guage and the temp guage and clock only work when they want to.
and the fuel light only comes on with in seconds before you run out of fuel.
does anyone else have this problem??

yes my 2 magna's are badly neglected as i am just a mere female that has no idea on how to fix these such problems (hence the reason i joined AMC thought i might learn something)
seems the only time my hubby is interested in doing anything to cars is when it is his nissan partol that needs to be worked on. ends up then i become the parts washer / grease monkey.
Anyway if he doesnt breath some life into my gen 3 this weekend ,,I will be degreasing my engine bay where i have the power steering leak on my gen 1 and try and figure out where it is actually leaking from, i have a manual for it so hopefully that helps a little...
any suggestions that could help me on my way guys?????????????
we were going to retire the poor old gal when her rego runs out next month but to tell you the truth i would rather drive my gen 1 any day than my gen 3.
shes ugly but i love her.

the fuel and temp is a cheap and easy fix its the regulator on the back of the cluster about $6 to fix
as for the clock is it the light or the whole clock?
and the power steering, any idea where abouts its actually leaking? (front of the engine bay/rear?)

the rack usually leaks from the top seal of the rack
best degrease all areas then look for leaks
location of seal
the spline/ universal joint of the steering column to the rack itself

it may be leaking from the boots or hose joins

if it is the rack that is leaking the whole unit has to be removed
you could fit one from a wrecker or fit an exchange unit

thanks for the reply , the clock well it will show eg 6.52 it will work fine for a hour and then i just goes out and when it comes back on it shows 1.00 lol and the power steering is leaking in the front of the engine bay i think it is comming out of the pipe that has a foam covering on it,, looks like it may be leaking from a connector or elbow part, it is very hard for me to explain as i do not know technical terms for parts.... looks like it has actually sprayed out at one stage cause there is a belt that runs near it, its cover has power steering fluid on it. the belt doesnt just the cover.

probably get a new hose from repco and hose clamps

or if it is the fitting on top of the pump
that needs two spanners to re tighten

hey guys i just finished having a proper optic nerve and its got a split in the pipe comming out of the top of the pump, NOT the one on the bottom connected to the resivor but the top one that goes from the pump up over the altenator and towards the back of the engine bay, can you tell me the name of that pipe please in the manual it says it is called the pressure pipe but in the pic it is metal and the one on my car is actually rubber or something like that. is this still the correct name for it "pressure pipe"?

best idea is get a replacement from a wrecker

its hydrualic pressure hose
and needs special joiners because of the
high pressure from the pump
