Hey i searched everywhere and couldnt seem to find a Thread which had a discussion about an auto diff in a manual transmission. I love the gear ratios of the auto - sits on a 100km/h on 2000rpm! I have no knowledge bout gearboxes, diffs, ratios etc - but somone told me they were gona put a Auto diff in their manual! Now im very interested!
Anyone know if its posssible to put the auto diff in the manual.. n how this wil affect my gear ratios?

Is the centre that is used, makes no difference to gearing

what you mean? so if i put the auto diff in the manual would it fit ?
it wont change the gear ratio is that wat ur saying?

pyalda,
The diff doesn't really effect your gear ratios (well, not completely true, it could alter the final drive ratio i think, but im fairly sure it's not the case here) - but essentially the gear ratios in the various magna boxes are different - 4speed auto, 5 speed auto, 5 speed manual.
Supposedly the 4 speed auto does 90, 150 (going off what someone else told me) in 1st, 2nd where as my 5SP manual does 60, 90.. so if you really wanted to change gear ratios you'd have to change box basically.

ok thats complex...
so basically its the acutaly gears which are differnt not the diff ratio as much?
any other way to get a bigger ratio?

No
The centre is bolted to the crownwheel, is this and the pinion gear that give you the final drive ratio
When you use the auto diff in a manual, usually because you have broken one, you are only using the centre that bolts to the crownwheel thus no ratio change

oh ok - no no i havnt broken anything i was only changing it for the ratio....
but thankyou for clarifying that for me and my apologies if it was a stupid question to ask.. im not mechanically minded when it comes to transmissions.
Whats the reason for it? At 110, the manual at 2900rpm is more economical than the auto and that sits around 2100-2200rpm IIRC.

oh its not the economy im more about just how anoying how the revs are so high... lol i know that sounds stupid but im always on the freeway 3hrs evreyday :( but oh well.
It's a valid question IMO.
If you could change the diff ratio, that example of 1st & 2nd redlining at 90/150kph could be changed to 80/135 or 100/165.
Sounds like you'd prefer to make it taller gearing, but if you've got the 4spd auto it could be disastrous for acceleration ability.
Is there any chance that EVO diffs would have different ratios and be interchangeable - not necessarily auto to manual but how about manual evo to manual magna ?????

Evo diff in a magna thats a thought! wonder if they fit

I have an evo vi I am wrecking at the moment, box will come apart to be converted to fit a magna awd anyway so may investigate to see if the crown wheel and pinion can be used as well as gear sets in a fwd box, looking at what I have seen thus far I should thing will be no issue at all
Remember that diff centre is different to the actual crownwheel which is what determines the final drive
Another awesome question for ya Mal... is it possible to swap the diff centers with the box still in the car?

Nope, box comes out and has to be opened up

Mal, I'd be very interested to know whether an Evo crown wheel and pinion could be fitted to an AWD, though I suspect that the set from a 7 GT-A might be a better bet... the taller gearing, in conjunction with engine mods, might yield slight more relaxed cruising.

This is my favourite post on AMC, ever. Until the AWD manual conversion is complete that is
