Was the original trans checked for errors before it was replaced? How "new" is the gearbox, and were any bits off the old box transferred to the new box? How much was the "new" box? If only a couple of hundred, it would be a second hand one from the wreckers, which may have its own problems. Or does "new" mean rebuilt? Or "new" as in shiny, zero km use, bought from a Mitsu dealer?

Obviously the problem wasn't in the bits that were replaced, then the problem lies elsewhere. My TS had a gearbox that was acting up, turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor, which is nowhere near the gearbox, on the throttle body. The TPS tells the TCU if the engine is at idle, and how much throttle you are applying once moving, and adjusts shift point accordingly. Could also be the TCU, transmission control unit.

As far as I know there is no "gearbox switch (tells the comp which gear to change into)" as you put it, unless you are talking about the TPS, or the shift switch which is cable operated from the gear shifter, or a pulse generator. Take it back to whoever changed the boxes and get them to do some intelligent fault finding.
