It's hard to explain what I am trying to say but I'll try my best.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that when I first drive my car after it has sat overnight, regardless of time or temperature the next day it won't go into 5th properly for a few kays...example would be when it goes into 5th at 60km/h it doesn't drop to 1100rpm or so like it usually does but hovers around 1500rpm. Same thing when on the highway, it'll sit on 2000rpm instead of the usual 1800rpm. like its still slipping the torque converter?

Mine doesn't do that. Sounds like something is wrong with your transmission fluid.

I check the auto fluid often Braedz. Levels perfect and it was flushed at 45,000km so its only 30,000km old :S

Can't say I have experienced that & my auto gets a bit of a flogging ....... obviously ;)

Doesnt the transmission fluid need to be up to tempurature to let it drop into overdrive / drop the revs from 2200 RPM to 2000RPM when cruising at 90?

My car - has always been like this.
When the transmission fluid is still cold / warming up, it wont let it pick up overdrive till it has reached optimal operating temp.

I can pick the exact moment on my drive to work, where itl do it - and it does it without fail, at that point.

It might also, be in part to the auto choke perhaps? (im guessing here - possibly wrong!)
It wont let the RPM drop / overdrive, till the engine is also at operating temp.

Just a thought....

I'll take note of that for the next few days going to work doddski and see. Just odd that I've only noticed this in the last few weeks...and I do tend to prefer the sound of my car over whatever is on the radio most mornings lol

I know other autos that are like this. Won't engage overdrive until the auto trans has warmed up. As long as it's behaving well otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Can't say I have noticed but my car does not get started cold most times the ambient is over 10c bit overnight it is usually at works carpark which is climate controlled at a constant 24c

Is your car parked outdoors, or in a garage? Mine doesn't do it but its always garaged.

mine does it but only when going straight to highway speed within two minutes. then once the engine temp gets to the normal reading drops back to its normal 1750 rpm
think its the engine protecting itself...

Doddski is correct.

It happens with my car. Until the transmission fluid is warm the transmission won't lock the torque converter. The RPM will be higher because there is a fluid coupling between the drive and the turbine (something like that; not entirely accurate) and so some torque is lost. Once the torque converter locks up there is a mechanical linkage with no fluid slippage.

My wife's Toyota takes about 1km of driving before it's warm enough to shift into over drive - so it only takes a minute.

If you're is taking a lot longer, it could be your thermostat is stuck open, making the engine take a lot longer to warm up.
That's something I'd be careful of - I know of people that have had a stuck thermostat and their car shifted down a gear while they were doing over 110 on the freeway because the gearbox temp also dropped too low.

Cheers for the information fellas. Yeah it is garaged Grubco, I have had it out overnight before and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I took it for a drive yesterday down to the QMD track day. Was about 5km before it started using overdrive. Engine temp was well and truly up to normal..does the box take a bit longer maybe?

..does the box take a bit longer maybe?

Yep.

There's no problem.

Yep.

There's no problem.

Well thats good to hear. It's due for a service shortly anyways so I'll ask out of curiosity

I'll bet my house on Knotched's explanation. My old TL did the exact same thing.

Have you got an extra / aftermarket trans cooler on it? Might take longer to warm up the trans then.
BTW, my wife's car is a 1.5L, so maybe it just warms up faster?

Goes in for a service hopefully this week if not next. Gearbox is faultless otherwise....I'm going on what others have said about the gearbox oil still warming up

@ mikey I have noticed that I get over revs in the morning on the freeway if I punt it

then it will change after hit rev limit sounds WICKED in TUNNELS
