I am thinking about getting some new Rotors for my 96 TE Non ABS and was wondering if you can get Slotted and Crossdrilled rotors for these models or just slotted ?

Also i am only thinking about replacing the front rotors and replacing all the pads. Has anyone done anything similar if so, how much of an improvement did you get from only replacing the front rotors ?

I thought that cross-drilled were more prone to cracking? I'd be sticking to slotted.

I replaced my stock front rotors with basic RDA slotted rotors, had my rear rotors machined, and put Bendix General CT pads all round. It's a bit hard to evaluate the improvement because my brakes were pretty shagged beforehand. They feel nicer, stop a little better, and considering they're 'all-round' pads' you can work them pretty hard before they fade... but it's nothing substantial. If you want much better brakes I'd be saving up for a Ralliart/380 twin piston upgrade.

In reality "saving" for AWD magna or 380 brakes is not that hard, there are plenty at wreckers ring around & you will get something really cheap. Brand new slotted & dimpled (not drilled, as they tend to crack) rotors will cost probably same as second hand brake set (rotors & calipers) from either 380 or AWD magna. 380 front brakes is slighly better option as the actual pad size is larger then from AWD magna. Rear is a bit more complex as 380 rotors wont fit & AWD rear will need a spacer which will set you back about $70.

I have priced some off Ebay and for standard slotted a front pair is between $100 and $150 so im thinking i might go with them, but i dont know what pads are good for them.

I wouldnt have thought a noticeable difference would be had from just replacing the rotors, but I could be wrong..
I just did the twin piston upgrade and love it! Much better than stock!

See i would like to do that but im really on a tight budget, i need to get 3 wheel bearings replaced, along with a CV Joint, and then all the rotors are on their way out.

Please don't buy brake rotors etc off ebay - it's very dodgy. If you're on a budget, the standard DBA vented discs will be fine with some Bendix GCT pads.

Are the rotors still machineable? if so, do that. It'll cost you $10-$20 a rotor to get machined and you will save a heap.
from experiance
Best basic pads to use are the QFM's. great pedal feel, Very good stopping power and NO DUST. Literally almost none at all
Next one I would use are the Ferodo Zero's. FANTASTIC pedal feel, sensational stopping power, but hideous amounts of dust, if you do not like cleaning your wheels stay away from these
last ones I would choose based on pedal feel and stopping power are the bendix general CT's. pedal feel isnt as nice as the zero's and they dont have the grab the zero's did. however, dust is almost nothing with these.

All of these pads are on cars with brand new rotors all around and brake new fluid. I am basing this on the front set of pads. All are very comparable as everything was new at time of replacing. i.e. I changed from zero's to CT's and noticed a change as soon as I hit the pedal.

I wouldn't bother with slotted. Period. Go for the best pads you can afford and THAT is where you will notice the difference (also BLEEEEEEEEEED your brakes with new fluid!)

Well i am thinking i will price up some Standard Rotors and some Slotted ones and if there if not too much difference i will go with Slotted otherwise hello standards. As for machining them there is stuff all left on the rotors all round so im pretty sure that is out of the question.

TUFFTR where can i find these brands of pads ? The QFM's sound pretty good because i hate cleaning my mags.

Brakes plus sell them as standard stock. however for the extra $30-$40 a set get the HPX range (performance range) I haven't used these yet but havent not heard a single bad preview on them yet.
As for prices, DBA Standard rotors cost me $62 each from bursons, and I'm sure slotted's were about $40-$50 more expensive per rotor. If I knew better back then and someone had told me crap pads with slotteds does sweet FS i would of gotten blanks and HPX's no worries

QFM also now sell their own preffered brand of slotted and slotted/dimpled(not fully drilled) rotors too.

Do not use bendix gct on slotted rotors they build up a resin on the edge of the slots (a brownish coloured resin)
if you use bendix pads use heavy or ultimates
