hi
cleaning out the shed the other day, i stumbled upon these 2 bolts, equal in size, and out of my magna.
they are left overs from my dif change that i did a few months back, and i cant figure out where they would go. and i dont apper to be missing any bolt.
they have the number 7, they are high tensile and have red on the top, as in pictures.
if you know where they come from, leave a reply.
and to get it over and done with, "oh dude, youve been driving around with them bolts missin'? your a **** head lol hur hur hur." ..... now there is no need for any of that.
thanks fellas, TOM.

If these are 12mm x 1.25 bolts these go in the bottom of the bell housing. They go in from the oppersite direction to the upper bolts, bolt in through the bottom corner of the engine block into the bellousing

thanks, would that be the front of back of the engine?

haha, nah mate, just undid all the bolt i could find and the diff changed itself. lol
i meant is it the firewall or radiator side of the motor, cars to low to look and just wondering how i should jack it up.
EDIT: lol, bellhousing is at the rear of the motor.:facepalm

There's one on either side of the motor, one is just above the starter (or below it) the other is in the same spot on the other side

So are they out of the bell housing or not..? Thet look too long for bell housing. If not back of crossmember. There three bolts there and they look like those ones. I was only there yesterday.:-)

thats wht i thought, they were too long for the b'housing, but my cross member (goes from front bumper to under center console area) has all the bolts in it. i will get under tomorrow when i get my hydraulic jack back.
i didnt seem to miss any holes when i put it back together, (i have done it 3 times now) the only reason i bring this up is because i found em under the bench in the shed, and the only other car i have pulled apart recently is a falcon, and since these bolts arent plastic, i am sure they arent off that. lol

the 2 lower bolts that bolt from the MOTOR to the BELLHOUSING are that sort of bolt, they are longer than the other 4 on the top, they also have a finer thread as they bolt into alloy bellhousing not the cast block
These bolts should be 66mm long overall length, be a 12x1.25 thread, if so they are the lower bell housing bolts and if these are missing from your car you had better get them back in quick smart as the only thing stopping your engine from pulling away from the gearbox will be the 4 10mm bolts under the bellhousing through the sump bracket, if these let go the 4 on top will not hold it all together

Ahh, yeah, the cross member does have one or two of those at the front, from memory they are massive though (bigger than your key).. the cross member would be hanging down if they weren't on, I can't remember how big the bolt are on the other end of the cross member.
I'd go with What Mal is saying, he's quite probably right.

oh yeah, im still going with madmagnas idea, its what i thought to but i have to check tommoz. twas just explaining that the cross member on my car has all 5 bolts in, and yes the front 2 are much much longer, but also have a locating point on them. the rear ones are only a 14mm.
as i said, i just wanted to know where to look as i am a bit strapped for time tomoz. and i have only one jack atm (not game to trust my scissor jack from the boot lol)
thanks fellas, i will report back tomorrow

You crawl under the car when it's on jacks? yizza!
I always place axle stands under the car and chock the rear wheels, I don't feel like getting crushed to death (death by sump!!)
I can't use ramps anymore due to lowering, besides I had a bad experience once.
I tried (for the first and last time) to drive onto them without a spotter..
I went straight over them and I had to jack the car up off them and toss them out.. scary..

i usually just jack it up and put 1 of my spares under the side, so if it falls, it wont squish me

surprised with all the suggestions that no one has mentioned that its a bolt that needs to be torqued up to the right specs hence there is a paint on it...

A friend of mine (who now owns a TS) used two factory scissor jacks on the front of his Astra. Then he removed the front wheels and it fell on the brakes. :facepalm

I've never trusted the tyre trick, I'm fatter than one of my tyres.
Given the colour on the threads, they look like they bolted onto alloy...

Is that what paint on them means?
I always torque the major bolts anyway (bellhousing, flywheel, suspension bolts etc)

No, the paint means that in the factory they were torqued, this is done on most critical bolts to show the quality control that the particular part has been torqued.
The rear cross member or brace bolts are not 14mm, they have 14mm heads but are actually 10mm bolts with a 1.25 pitch
On all third gen magnas you have the following
4, 12mm x 1.5pitch which go through the bell housing into the block, either side of the water pipe and 2 lower down, one of which holds the earth
2, 12mm x 1.25 pitch which go further down, at the bottom of the block, these bolt in from the other side thorugh the block into the bell housing, when trans is removed you will also see 2 dowel pins in the block to locate the gearbox
4, 10mm x 1.25 which go through the sump bracket into the lower part of the gear box
These are all the bell housing bolts as such, with the 4 lower bolts you will also notice the one that is forward of the block is a darker colour as is slightly shorter

haha... that's funny, because I searched for about 30 minutes trying to figure out why I had 3 bolts one length and a shorter one, in the end I just put it in and thought "oh well"

by saying they are 14mm bolts, i meant 14mm heads i guess thats just how i distinguish between different bolts. when i get under there tomorrow i will be able to check out what the go is.
