Hey everyone, I bought a new middle section for my exhaust (cat to rear muffler)
I bought it to replace the middle pipe which had the middle resonator removed and was a bit tiny and loud on the freeway, I also wanted to quiet things down before the Pacemakers go on next week.
I bought it off Ebay expecting a genuine Mitsubishi pipe but what I got was much better!
It's made by MSA Exhaust systems, mandrel bent with a straight through resonator AND the same pipe diameter all the way (old pipe got massive then went down to 2" just before the rear muffler) It's also got a bluey grey ceramic coating, which has now turned black haha.
Easily bolted on and has given the car a little more omph (obviously due to the 2.25" diameter all the way back) It has a very subtle note attached to the Lukey (not too quiet though)

The stock 3rd gen piping is something like 2.45"... this is the 3.5l.
I haven't heard of the piping going down to 2" before the muffler on a stock system before, can someone confirm this?
Also, I'm quite certain the stock piping is almost 2.5", so if your piping was 2.25, it was the bottleneck (that shouldn't be there?) that caused your problem and that's where you saw a difference in performance.
I would consider going to a 2.5" or replacing it with stock Magna piping, because 2.25" is less diameter than 3.5l stock.

Just ordered one of these myself, my previous piping has rusted through... I thought on 3L Magnas stock piping is 2.25"?

It's a 3L, not sure what the actual pipe diameter was but the new pipe is the same size as original (minus the shrink before the rear muffler) I had heard it's 2.25 on a 3.0L
The stock pipe may not go down to 2" before the rear muffler but it's definately smaller between just before the muffler flange, it was a stock OEM 3.0L pipe.
If it were still light outside I'd take a photo.

I had to retorque the bolts today (shrinking gaskets) I hope I don't have to do that too many times

Now, that's weird, I just measured my old middle pipe and on the cat flange it's 63mm (so is the new one) it's the same size as the flange on the pacemakers.
Did some TF's have a 2.48" system?

what would be the difference between 2.25 and 2.5 inch catbacks??

Just sent a message to the guy over eBay
"
Hi there, This a brand new after market. No special brand. 2.5" pipe measures 63mm.
"
Did you measure the pipe from inside or outside?? I'm pretty sure its meant to be measured from the outside? Most automotive piping is 2mm thick

The Brand is MSA, I measured from the flange opening, just stuck a ruller across it, so if I measured from the ouside that would make 65mm..
I'm still confused as well because my old pipe was 63mm and it's a 3.0L, anyway, ask the guy on Ebay to post some pics, might be better than me getting under car shots

Yup, asked the guy, he said he'll send it through 2moro.
I'm pretty sure all the v6 magnas got 2.5" shittily bent non mandrel catbacks....
Are you 100% sure your pipe are mandrel bent? And that everything is straight through?

What's the diff between mandrel and pressed? my thoughts were that mandrel meant the pipe keeps the same diameter on the bends?
It's all straight through. I shined a torch into the middle resonator and could see the honey comb stuff then straight through it into the rest of the pipe
Looking at the standard pipe it bulges out towards the end then gets a little smaller into the rear muffler, this new one is just one bent (in sections) pipe from the resonator to the rear flange.

Crap! looks like the rear flange is leaking.. I'll have to suss it out tomorrow or maybe get the exhaust guy to fix it when he does my headers on Tuesday.
Note to self "Leave exhaust work to the pros"

Don't ya hate going out in the rain, sliding under the car in a puddle only to find, the flange isn't leaking..
Not sure why I have black marks near the flange but it's not coming from the new connection.
I've probably just created a leak by undoing all the bolts and repositioning the flange.. hmm
