Hi guys,

Myself & a mate (VW Golf) are planning to buy a double DIN GPS unit to be installed in our cars.

Wanted to ask what the recommendations are from the forum members.

Currently I have a 7 year old Alpine Head Unit with a 6 disc Alpine changer in the boot which has performed flawlessly. It is coupled to Sony Xplode all around which I think might need updating as well.

The budget is under $750 for all of this including installation and prefer to stay with known brands.

As for requirements, GPS is paramount, followed by bluetooth, DVD/TV is a bonus.

Installers or stores to be recommended should be in Sydney

Thanks

Double DIN with GPS isn't cheap. For example, if you wanted to stick with Alpine, you'd have to spend $1099-$1899 on the headunit, plus another $999 for the navigation add-on.

Pioneer make a couple of models for a little under the $1000 mark, but they have a smaller screen (4-5", compared to a full-size 7") and normally only have one or two RCA outputs. It goes without saying that you wouldn't be able to use your stacker either.

for that budget you can get an ebay one that got no brand... quality is questionable but does everything you required for under $750.. probably the best thing in it is the use of the GPS

Depending on which golf it is I can probably get the unit designed to fit in nicely.

If not I've got suppliers for the Chinese ones if you need it sourced.

like the others had said, it's not cheap for a GPS double DIN H/U. i searched earlier this year and from memory only Kenwood, Clarion and Pioneer are the only brands that have in-built GPS headunits. Alpine do make a system but you've gotta buy the head unit and GPS system separately- which is stupid IMO..

there was a particular headunit from Pioneer that i was about to purchase, from memory the rrp was $2400~. i got a discounted price of $1800, but it was still over my budget, so i went to the next one down that didn't have the GPS option. Pioneer at the time was the cheapest i could find that had the in-built GPS capabilities, that was for the branded stuff- no-name brands you'll find plenty around the $700-900 mark (not fitted- fitting is easy anyways)

I've recently bought a pioneer gps head unit for $620 of eBay! It's an awesome unit has gps, hands free, and ipod/iPhone fully intergrated! It's only got the smaller gps screen but I've had no problems at all! At one stage jb had the same unit reduced from 1100 to 680! I'll get the model number when I get home and if you keep an eye out it should def be on your list!!

Thanks for the reply guys.

Wendnarb, would appreciate if you could tell me the model #.

Joe Bellissimo, my mate will be in touch with you. He drives a Golf Hatchback, 2004 4th gen., I think. Might even try and convince another Passat owner if we can work something out.

I just recently bought one of those no-name brands off eBay for $329.00. Got a member here (Murph03/Michael) to fit it for me. It has 800x480 hi-res 7" screen, ipod and usb connectivity. 2 SD card slots (one for GPS and one for general purpose). It has GPS (works really well), TV, Radio, Bluetooth (with interface to my phones phonebook), DVD etc. It is also, very importantly, multi-tasking, that is, it can run the GPS in the background while you watch video/listen to radio. Its got the 50x4 Mosfet amp built-in and is better quality than the stock unit. It also has RCA out for amps. The GPS is very handy as it has road speed limits of all roads and warns when I over speed.

No issues with it. Just alternator whine when listening to CDs. Strange though that there is no whine when listening to a DVD full of MP3s or radio. When I attached the ground wire, I did not scrape of any paint so that may explain the whine.

Thanks for the response.
Is the screen clear? Does the software on them lag or anything going inbetween menus and changing songs etc?

very nice hi-res 800x480 screen. no lag in general. Only lag when it is loading/parsing a DVD with 4 GBs of MP3s and the usual few seconds of start up time.
