View Full Version : No Sparks - Common Magna Issues?

G'day magna users.

I am new to this top-notch forum (so far I've only read the posts), and first off want to say hello to you all.

I am driving a TR 1992 2.6l 4 cyl Magna, or should I say was driving. Last week, when I wanted to leave to work, the car fired but then shut down. Now, the engine is cranking but it won't fire: No Sparks!

What I have basically done, till now is:

Checked all fuses and relays: all seems to work normally

Changed all the leads and spark plugs (they were pretty worn-out).

Changed the Distributor Cab (also worn out)

Changed the coil with a 2nd Hand coil. Didn't work, so I got a replacement coild of the wrecker again. Still not working

No voltage leaves the coil, when cranking the engine. So i think, the problem is somewhere between the battery and coil (or hall sensor at distributor)

Checked main relay near ECU. Seems to work fine (clicks when turning the key to start the engine)

I measured some voltages and resistance in all the cables, but here again: all seems pretty normal. There is a voltage on the cable that goes into the coil. Internal resistance of primary wiring at coil is also normal.

Here my question to you experienced Magna folks: Do you know any common issues with magnas (or cars in general) that cause the described symptoms. I have really no idea what to do next and especially neither the time, nor the money to change all the possible bits & pieces that could be faulty.

I want to get the Magna throught the roadworthiness next week and sell it afterwards. So I am helpful for any advice.

Cheers, Manuel

hey Manuel,

Welcome to the club! I had the same problem with mine a while ago.
Turned out it was the Ignition module on the distributor (where the sensor plugs into).
it was about $70odd and a pain to pull apart and replace so i just got a new dizzy, problem solved!

Thanks for the answer BIG 4 cyl, the problem is solved in the meantime:

It wasn't the Distributor or the ignition module (I actually got a replacement distributor from the wrecker). When I took a look at the ECU, I saw that the big condensator in the middle was melted.
Went to Pick a Part and got an ECU for 58$. And car is running perfectly again.
