Yep I'm with Madmax, ditto on take your time. It sounds like your first time, so do it in stages and lay the parts in groups of the stages as you go (photos will help), it will make it easy on re-assembly. If your not sure about something then do a post.
Cheers Dave

Its a time consumng job, the most important part to remember is make sure your engine is timed properly before you reinstall your valve gear. Also take extra extra time to make sure your block surfaces are 100% clean and flat. I cannot stress this enough. Use a quality sealant on the gaskets and take the time to replace your oil seals. But MOST IMPORTANT is the timing and valve gear. These 3.0 are not free spinners so if its out the valves WILL hit the pistons when you crank it and then you will be doing it all over again. If you have the coin, get your valves re-seated at a reputable head repair shop, and a good machine of the surface goes a long way. Other than that, have fun!

For starters, use genuine gaskets, there will be no need to use sealant, use the genuine head gaskets as these are far better than oftermarket ones
Make sure you heads are clean and resurface them, make sure also that too much material is not removed as this can cause other issues
Do you know your heads need doing as would be very unusual for a third gen head gasket to leak given they are pressed metal gaskets

I don't own the car, I was looking at buying it, I have only seen it on ebay and the owner said it needed a new head gasket, I don't know why they think it does need a head gasket, maybe they are wrong, I could have got the car for $800, its Altera, some body damage, no rego, I thought $800 is cheap but may end up costing me a lot by the time I had the head gaskets done, rego plus other things that maybe wrong with it, so I decied to give it a miss and buy a dearer one in better condition, maybe a TJ which I like more.

"needs a new head gasket" is code-speak in ads to indicate the engine needs replacing. A $800 TF would most likely need 4 times that amount and many hours of labour spent on it to get it to a reasonable condition. Going up to the $2,500 to $4,000 is more likely to get you a car that is less of a headache.

a head gasket generally fails due to overheating i think. so if thats happened there may be other issues and damage to repair.

Agree with the above two.
Essentially you dont know what your gonna get. Could be engine blown, at the very least the heads could be warped beyond repair and suddenly a "cheap" car becomes very costly. Especially since it has no rego and no roadworthy. Best look elsewhere champ.
