View Full Version : Radio-CD Seems OK - No Sound

Here's one I haven't come across before. I have a 1997 Magna Altera LS, and recently the original radio-cassette stopped, or at least the sound stopped. The radio head-unit appeared to turn on OK.

I replaced it with a 2000 Magna radio-CD from the wreckers. Again, it appears to turn on and tune into various radio stations, and the CD will run - but still no sound!

I've checked all the fuses I can, and am at a standstill. Does anyone know of any in-line speaker fuses or relays that might be the cause?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm seems abit odd, have you touched any of the wiring?
Cant see how all speakers would stop working from a head unit unless the amp was shot

You say that you replaced with another standard h/u? did you also get the code for it too?

Buy a new headunit becuse your replacement seem stuff or you have blown your speakers. I would highly doubt that you have stuff all your speaker lol If a standard head unit swap with another standard unit it all plug and play. So there shouldn't be any shorting. Could be a security code issues but if it was the headunit wouldn't work?

Thanks for the comments.

The replacement head unit came with a security code which worked OK and the unit appears to run allright, even searching and tuning in to various radio stations (the power aerial works fine). It also takes in a cd OK and displays track info - just no sound! I find it difficult to believe that all of the speakers could blow at one time, but I guess I'll have to start looking at them. I was thinking that maybe the speaker leads from the radio were routed through a fuse/fusible link/switch that may have blown?

So both the original and the replacement head units seem to do the same thing - they appear to be working, but no sound.

I've checked the couple of audio fuses in the fuse boxes under the dash and in the engine compartment - they all test OK.

There wouldn't be any fuse that would make the speaker not work. So I think it time to remove the speaker and check with a mutlimeter on ohm scale and see what resistance you have on your speakers :) Where are about in qld are you I might be able to come over help you out :) You haven't got an amp connect to your speaker?

Thanks for the offer Sparkington, but I should be able to check out the speakers, and just work backwards from there. I'm pretty tied up this week, and away next weekend, so the Magna will remain mute for the next couple of weeks.

I have the same sort of problem I just purchased my wife a 2001 magna the radio worked at the card dealer ship but it was sent off for detailing and when my wife picked it up it does not work. When you turn on the radio it reads AUX and if you put a cd in it says disc and AUX on the screen of the cd player but no sound, no radio. Any ideas why it no longer works?

May sound simple, but did you test your speaker wires with a 9V battery / multimeter while you had the dash out??

Soo... here i am in December 2011... and have just taken receipt of a 2001 Magna Executive, 3.5 V6 Auto.

Car drives like a dream, but as others appear to have experienced - receiving power to factory radio/cd player... but no sound?

Any outcome as to what the problem was?

I have had this issue caused by something large that had been placed in the boot (lawn mower). It broke the connecter on the bottom of one of the rear speakers shorting it out. This stopped sound to all speakers. recommend you check the connectors or try unplugging each of the rear speakers while the stereo is on and seeing if you get sound to the other speakers
