Where would be the optimum place to mount tweeters in a Third gen?

Apparently, the ideal setup is to have the distance from right ear to right tweeter similar
to the distance from left ear to left tweeter.

This would seem to rule out the doors.

The dash is very low and kick panels small and cluttered (fuse box), so they would be a
difficult spot, without custom made panels.

Dash holes seem OK, but is it bad to have them too high up?

Do your ears have to actually "see" the tweeters for good staging ? i.e Could you mount them right up under the dash? Should I stop trying to mount tweeters and get a girlfriend?

In all the recording studios I've worked in, and my own mastering setup at home, we try to keep the tweeters an equal distance from the ears in an effort to reduce the effect of comb filtering caused by the time delay in the sound waves reaching each of the ears. Unfortunately in a car, this is very unpractical, and will only be effective for the driver. Thankfully, just placing the tweeters on each side of the dash (or whatever) won't have any adverse effects on the sound, I mean I can't hear any major hassles.

My best advice is this: Your tweeters should always be placed so that you can stare straight down the barrel of the driver. High frequencies are very directional. For the best listenning experience it is important that nothing comes between your ears and the tweeters.

Personally, I like UNDER8D's install where he has used a hole saw to cut a hole in the top of the door and mounted the tweeter there. Other options are mounting on the A pillar, however I suggest you resist the urge to use the mounts in the dash that point at the window, you're just asking for combing to occur there.

Cheers,
Damien.

Yeah mine (http://www.x.xstreamhost.com/irr/tweetposition.jpg) are in the doors too but they dont really point at anything.. they're offset towards the driver and passenger but not really very much so but they sound clear as hell..

When I got my sterio reworked In my car i had the tweeters placed wherre the old 4 inch speakers were in the dash. Ive never been able to notice any problems with the sound quality.

As The Sandman pointed out, the best place I reckon is the behind the stock tweeter covers on the triangle door peice. I've had my tweeters all over the place and when I swapped my pioneers for the stock one they sounded much better there instead of on the dash.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Triangle bit in door looks like a good spot. Would I need to get that bit from a VRX and then fit it into my TH door?

The sail area tweeter mounts are about $14 - so pretty cheap :P

How did you mount your pioneer tweeters behind the stock tweeter covers?

In my 2nd gen I aimed the drivers side tweeter at the passenger and vice versa. Because treble is directional and can be overpowering (ie: ear piercing) this allows for a more even sound. It worked quite well. Oh and I mounted them on the top of my door trim.

Just an idea.
