View Full Version : 99 Executive any common suspension faults?

I've just bought a 99 Magna Executive 3.5 Auto sedan with 182k km.
It's great but there's a bit of knocking from the suspension on bumpy roads, it sounds like there may be a worn bush or two. The bounce test shows the shock absorbers are fine, and it's just passed its inspection (which I had to do for the rego to be transferred to me).

Does anyone know of any common wear parts in the Magna suspension? Any parts you'd expect to replace at this age / kilometers. Any approximate costs for this type of work?

Thanks for any advice

Just a heads up, that's a 3rd gen, you've posted under the 2nd gen section so may not get a knowledgeable response. Don't know if there's a "move" function for a thread?

Though off-hand, a few things to check are the top mounts and the steering system. My 2nd gen's had the same type of thing since I got it, never did find the culprit.

Not sure if you want to lower or not but if you do the best solution would be king lows with Boge, Springs are $240 if purchased as a set and kings $540 if again purchased as a set plus freight

The original dampers are getting on in mileage however I would say that the most likely cause of your knock would be your strut tops, these are a common thing after this sort of age.

Thanks MM and all other repliers. What does strut top replacement cost including labour?
I'm begiining to think it might make economic sense to sell this car and buy a 2005 Magna with approx 100,000 kms, the going rate privately seems to be $8,500
This car stands me at $5000, with another say $1000 for suspension work that'd be $6000, Hmm. for an extra $2500 I'd get a 5 year old 3.5 v6 (heaven for a Brit!)

Check the strut tops, ball joints, tie rod ends, steering tie rods, steering rack mounts. They can all cause clunks. Normal for the age of the car. Any 11 year old car will have problems that need sorting, buying a 5 year old car to replace it will just give you a different set of problems. Needless to say DIY will be cheaper.

Thanks Max, I agree a 5 yr old may have faults but in the ride/suspension department it stands a chance of feeling 'as new', whereas regaining that feel in an 11 year old could be expensive or impossible.
I guess my view is coloured by my last car in the UK, an Audi A4 which wore out suspension links frequently

Parts for Magnas are cheap and they are easy to work on, unlike Audis. lol
