I've read the manual and am more confused. Can I adjust the handbrake through the bottom of the centre console, by taking out the floor of it, or do I need to remove the whole console?

Handbrake is adjusted at the back wheels.

just successfully adjusted handbrake by lifting out box in centre console, took up play with adjusting nut there, took all of 1 minute. What a fantastic car!!! (I once spent a whole day adjusting the handbrake on a Renault 16)

You need to get the brake shoe clearance right at the back wheels before you adjust the cable in the centre console, the cable should be slack when the brake is off, otherwise one of the brake shoes will be dragging on the drum all the time. Unless the cable is stretched there is usually no need to touch the centre console adjusting nut. But its your car . . . . . .
Theres adjustment at both ends! lol
Edit....youre to quick for me Max!

Manual says to do the drum clearance first, then if needed the front adjustment.

The front is only needed if you have a stretched cable, which rarely happens. Only adjusting the front can lead to shoe drag when the brake is meant to be off.

I'll check that there's slack in the cable, but I'm fairly sure there is. i still think it's a fabulous car.....
