hi guys im a noob to these forums but i have a question for you , i have a 97 TF auto and when i shift from P to R the engine revs up then jumps violantly into gear and also from P to D it doesnt jump into gear but still revs up then shutters into gear.
now ive tried the reset and re-learn process numerous times and doesnt fix the problem.
should i do a complete power flush of the gearbox? also is there any type of bands in the gearbox or tension springs that could need adjusting?

ok just had a look in a repair manual and it said that cause could possibly be abnormal line pressure or malfunction of the oil pump or valve body. does this sound correct to anyone?

yeah mate i'd be trying a full power flush. don't just dump the sump and refill it, most of the fluid sits in the torque converter, do a full flush and refill.

thanks mate , also said in the repair manual to disassemble the valve body and give it a good clean...where is the valve body??? im confused by this silly manual , maybe should just do a full power flush and go from there

just came to me why dont i buy a new engine and box?? my engine has done 292xxx and is starting to shudder and loose power at low revs in every gear , this wouldnt be caused by the gearbox acting up would it?

so does the trans change gear when you are driving or is it constantly in 1 gear, what you are describing sounds a lot like it is in limp mode

it changes into every gear , it just does it at higher revs then it should + the jumping and shuddering into drive and reverse , oh and i should mention the gearbox was fine untill i disconnected the battery one day to install a new cd player , reconnected it then presto gearbox jumps into gear BUT as ive said ive done the re-learn process atleast 6 times already and doesnt fix the problem.

just give it time and k's to relearn.

my auto does something like that during relearn, it takes a couple days worth of driving to be perfect.

flush it, then let it relearn for a few days. If it doesnt fix it, you have problems then.

Whereabouts are you? If you were to come down to one of our carwash meets in campbelltown we'd be able to help you with doing a flush

im on the south coast of new south wales , anyway i took the car to a mate who works at a gearbox place and he said either the valve body has some broken springs in it or the oil pump is rooted , so i was wondering how much a second hand gearbox would be because i herd its in the thousands to get them re built.

I have a 4sp auto which I can sell for $650 plus freight, to NSW would think to be around the $70 mark

Is still in the car but can come out fairly quickly. Is in a TJII but will fit anything from TE onwards

Mine's been doing that since I got it, even after a power flush.

Then again, I reckon my auto box is about to die too haha

Check the TPS adjustment.

TPS plug is a plug that's connected on the throttle body...

Throttle Position Sensor

Hard to explain but it's the big plug on the top haha

Oh, by the way, my car went into limp mode and it was revving out without moving anywhere then suddenly engaging and making me hop.

Turns out the gearbox wasn't dead as I originally thought, it was the TPS plug not being connected properly...

Protip to myself, my gearbox jolting from D to R may be still caused by the TPS plug

I had this same problem i had taken it to mechanics, trans specialistis no one could fix it they kept saying nothing was wrong but i knew something was wrong as when i went from p to d or d to r it felt like the motor was gonna jump out of the engine bay. My last idea worked i went to supercheap auto and bought a bottle of wynns transmission rejuvonator i think its called something lie that. i put it in took the car for a drive gave it a hammering and the car changes gear better than it did brand new i have had the car since brand new and it now has almost 400k on the clock. i then asked the mechanic why this fixed it and he said because the synthetic stuff in it i wish he did that years ago cause i have put up with it for so long
