Hey all, I just bought a Pioneer Head unit DEH-P5650MP (managed to knock $110 off the price!! :D ) and got some Pioneer 6.5 splits to boot. (I am not ready for sub and amp stuff yet, just going to run the basics for now). Ok, I want to really try to install the whole thing myself but as I am an absolute novice I need some help... I have done a search but cannot find what I am after. The mounting holes on top of the dash for the tweeters is my immediate problem. I did not realise but they are just dirty great big holes in the dash once you remove the covers. How are you meant to mount the tweeters, do you have to buy some sort of mounting bracket/seat for them from Mitsubishi or something? or do you have to make them yourself? I don't want to install them in the doors or a-pillars, I am sure the answer is simple but I just looked at it and went... I am going to go back outside and have another look but if anyone has the standard answer that would be great... I might need to use this thread for the whole install lol . I really want to do it myself and write up a how-to-for dummies guide! Thanks in advance Cheers Neil.

I'm pretty sure it is Series II TJs that some specs have tweeters standard, & they have specific mount for them which replace the black plastic triangle section at the front of the window (Circled in pic below).
U can get them from mitsu spares for like $17 each?, & I wrekon they'd be a much better option then the 2 holes in the dash... U'd have to set it up properly or they'd give pretty funny imageing i wrecon. A lot easier/factory looking too. :D
PS. Sorry to howevers door this is.

Thanks heaps for that... I was wondering if it was that for a second.
OK...Now Problem 2: I don't know if I have bought the wrong front speakers but they just don't look like they are gonna fit... me thinks they are too small... I still have an hour to quickly return/replace them. They are pioneer 150W (is that too weak for fronts? now I look at them they look a bit pov!) Thanks again... I don't know whether I am supposed to try to install them into the door trim or door itself, either way things don't line up.

Will look at that too.... I am trying to decide if I should return them now while I can. they just don't look physically wide enough even to drill new holes.

The speakers u got are definately too small i put a pair of alpine type s two ways (6 1/2in) in the doors of my tj and all i needed to do was make a couple of new screw holes other than that they fit sweet.
You must have 6in or something.

I found out they are definately 6.5's, I took them back to the shop and their tech guy had a look, said that it is just the mounting brackets which are not reaching the plastic mouldings. He gave me 2 free spacers which have done the job... so now the main front speakers are installed just not the tweeters yet.
I have spent the rest of my evening pulling the panels off my dash to get to the head unit... what a bugger for a novice! I am following my Gregory's handbook but even this is a bit vague... anyway I have stopped for the night as I have blown two spot lamps (dropped them) and I now have the radio and surround partially hanging out trying to disconnect the plugs and wiring to the stereo and climate control. Too dark now to work.
Unfortunately the Gregory's manual doesn't go much further so I am going to search through past posts and the net... see what I can find on replacing the head unit and wiring.
The only thing that is concerning me now is that I have to do the wiring yet to the new head unit. I am paranoid I am going to stuff it up but I am determined to do this!!!
Thanks to all who gave info and advice. I may need more help yet! Cheers Neil

Just an update, here are some pics of the front install and the spacer used to make fitting them easier. I don't know where you can buy these spacers but they must be out there.
ok, so u are sure u have 6.5" speakers, but they don't fit the factory mounts correct? Despite this, some other ppl have 6.5" and they seem to fit perfectly....
MadMag were u able to just screw straight into the white plastic stuff or were spaces definately needed? what about mdf?

I am still a bit confused by it too (maybe 95% sure!). Now here is the question can someone clear this up for me...
When you see 6.5", does it refer to the overall width of the speaker (including cover) or the width of the top of the cone itself, cos in the picture dimensions the 6.5" seems to refer to the width of the speaker overall?
The box says 6-1/2", I have checked online but it is all in metric and when I convert it it equals 6.49" but it just seems a bit odd. Maybe you or someone else can double check online for me... the speakers sound pretty good though!. The thing is looking at the pioneer speaker range they don't look to go any wider than 160mm (well not by much anyway). S***, the more I look at it the more confused I am getting.

No, I wasn't able to screw into the white plastic unfortunately. I needed the spacers (in the pics above) which seemed to work just fine. I was looking at minimal fuss and the spacers did the trick, no cutting or anything.

The 6" Boston FS-60s I put in on the weekend didn't fit the factory holes but I just screwed them straight into the plasitc surround no probs.
Seems odd that the holes in the supposedly 6.5" speaker don't even reach to the plastic mounting frame :doubt:
