Hi guys im in desperate need of help  recently i installed a new Pioneer Head unit and one cable from the old unit had nowhere to go it was a black-yellow one.
in the mitsubishi manual it says this is the rheostat cable, so i just left it out unplugged.
Now i dont have illumination behind the front dash, from speedo, the glove box and the rear lights for night driving.
i found a blown fuse  which i replaced and it didnt fix anythin as it later blew as well it was a 10amp fuse the No.2 fuse in the engine bay fuse box.
if anyone could help it would be very useful
thanks
Tom

Insulate the wire that you left out.. as it may be power thats running to ground and shorting out, in turn blowing a fuse!
Then replace your fuse.. hopefully that will help! If not.. Check the fuses inside as this happened in my mates Familia!

Rheostat in the HU loom? What the? Unless i'm mistaken, that would be ur dash dimmer dial.. can't think why it would be anywhere near the HU. Although anything is possible... i once blew the fuse for the right rear parker while installing a HU in a Lancer
Was it actually "UNPLUGGED" or cut off & not connected to anything? If unplugged, plug it in, if not find where it is supposed to go.

it was plugged into the old radio that was in the car into it and when i installed the new head unit it had nowhere to go but it was plugged into the radio i dont know why either.
right now i have to find a new fuse and then insulated that wire.
Hopefully ill be able to fix it and not have anymore problems
thanks guys

The factory HU will only light up when the interior dash lights are on. The Rheostat wire contains the current that tells the factory head unit that the dash lights are on and also how bright they are (according to the actual rheostat control - the dimmer pot mounted on the dash). In my TE I just terminated this wire and all seems to be good. Just make sure you have covered the bare wires with insulation tape so that it is not shorting out to ground. As you have realised your interior dash lights and your tail lights run off of the same fuse.

On my old HU the backlight on the small LCD screen had gone so no light from it could that also be a problem or not since it is not plugged in anymore

I don't think so.
The only wires you should need to hook up from the factory wiring harness to the new HU will be the three power wires (black, red and yellow), the four speakers (8 wires) and the auto antenna (and the actual Antenna signal of course). You should be able to just terminate anything left over and it should be fine. If this isn't the case then there's got to be a problem somewhere else.

The left over wire isnt touching the metal. also i have replaced the fuse and as soon as i put on the first lights before the driving lights the fuse blows straight away.
could there possibly be any plugs loose causing this. if yes which would be the obvious one as i am about to remove the new HU from the car again to see what could be touching or what has gone wrong.
when i looked in the MItsubishi instriuction manual which i bought it said when removing the old radio you have to remove the centre instrument panel with the air ducts but that would be a waste of time cause i got the old one out without removing that.
also in the troubleshooting it said to check the plug behind that centre display panel.

when i did my headunit i found that the green/white wire had power when i turned my lights on so i connected it up to my illumination wire on my hu and everything works good, where have you got the green/white wire because if it is shorting out or in the wrong spot this could definately be causing your problem.

I have unplugged the new Pioneer head unit and the plug from it and now when i switch on the lights the illumination now works which is good and not good cause either their is something wrong with the HU or the wiring.
Im not sure which it would be. if anyone has any ideas why the illumination now works pls reply
thanks

Are there meant to be two earth wires connected to the new HU as now when i check that spare wire it has resistance with the metal of the car, but so does the cable that is connected to the earth cable in the HU
if there are meant to be two earth wires then should i connect those together to the Head Unit
thanks

what year magna do you have? in my tj there is no earth wire in the factory loom as the original headunit was earthed through its mounts, your new head unit will have an earth wire and you just need to find a suitable screw/bolt on the chassis somewhere and that's that.

I think i'm all out of ideas, someone with a TF will hopefully give you the run down on what wire goes too what. The fact that you have two earth wires in the factory loom tells me something not good, is your multimeter working ok??? At most there should only be one, i would just make my own earth that way ya know it's right. You'll find ya illumination wire by systematically (wow that a big word) checking each wire for power with your lights on then off, you'll work it out.

the solution was the left over cable was part of the dimmer and so was the cable i had used for ground which when later checked with lights on had a voltage going through so did the spare cable.
solution ground cable attached to metal of car and the 2 cables the green/white and black/yellow are taped up and not used again as they only work with the old unit
thanks
