Marveys Comp???

I was there and managed to get a 135.5 Out of My 2 Pioneers in a shitty sealed pre fab box. Although i really messed up on the db Drag.

Oh well new subs should be in tomorrow.

I got a Lame 121 db... but then again... only using about 40W RMS... (Thats was on a hand held DSE metre)

Highest I have ever gotten was about 10 Years ago in a Pulsar Sedan and it was 142.1db.
Now I have grown out of the DB race and settling into what sounds good... not how loud it goes

like around 133 atm, unfortunately as my amp fagged itself im only running 1 coil atm so something must be sorted out there. not that im about numbers any more, more trying to perfect my listening experience.

Loudest ive sat in was 161dB but that was a fairly soft experience, my favourite system would probably be me mates old Navara kingcab that hit about 145ish iirc, wasnt the loudest or the best looking of the bunch, but it was so damn unexpected, and such a fun system.

What were you running ? Thats VERY loud.

Tyson it was an amazing turn out we exepected 8-10 cars instead we got 21 and many on lookers. Also that Madza and Falcon were pretty clean except when the guys misses' missed the ramps with the Madza and scraped it.

I just pi$$ed the wife off, I think she hit 185db.... ;)

Ah i thought she was scream because you hit 185 and i thought loudest in oz.

Woob
23-08-2010, 06:29 PM
rofl, considering 185dB is about twice as loud as the world record, i doubt it was in his car... unless the wife was in the car at the time of course :)

peaandham
23-08-2010, 06:47 PM
i wouldnt say its twice as loud , lol

Mr İharisma
23-08-2010, 06:50 PM
Yeah I think the loudest car is Oz so far this year is around 170db.

I think the current record is low 180's on Termilab.

Ohhh woob the wife was in the car, I think I cut someone off accidentally and then BAM!!! lol

Woob
23-08-2010, 06:51 PM
true, its about 2.5 times as loud actually, well spotted

yeah his name was gordon he had picked up the mazda a week before and took it straight to marveys to have it refitted hahaha it was his second day actually driving it.. the ford is his ladies and the mazda is his. bit backwards hahah

and sorry but i call bullshit on 185db thats louder than a jumbo jet taking off..

Well the commonly accepted measurement for the volume of a jet taking off is around 140dB, the biggest difference between this and a car in an audio competition is that the car in the audio competition (at a competition level) is essentially a box in itself, therefore the measurement can be considered to be taken at 1m away. and is a subbass frequency.

Now a jet engine is measured from 100 meters away at a much higher frequency. Now for double the distance, sound essentially halves in volume (frequency dependant), so if you were to compare the two..

185dB car audio car at 100 meters: 155dB (which is unrealistic, as car audio relies nearly entirely on a very specific design to cause maximum air pressure to focus on an exact position within itself to produce such devistating volumes. it only has to displace the air within the sealed cabin of the car to achieve that kind of volume.

A jet engine at 1m would be around 170dB, which in free air, from a device that is designed to try and suppress its noise output, is much more significant in comparison in my opinion.

They really are 2 totally uncomparable scenarios that people often misquote when discussing 'loudness'

hey damon, love ya work!
however i was under the impression for each unit increase in distance sound decreased by 9 times. then again maybe that was light. or something else entirely?

May be more accurate, as far I have learnt, in vacuum (another point to put into perspective, atmospheric conditions most certainly affect the perceived 'loudness' of sound), there is no exact algorithm for calculating less dissipation over distance, but may average somewhere around 6dB. Another point to make is that perceived loudness is a very different thing from the power of sound. 'power' is what doubles each 3dB, whereas 'loudness' is much more gradual.

This is as far as I have learnt in regards to the matter and I am sure there is much more i can learn about it (and expect I will) so if I ever state any information that is likely or thought to be incorrect, I am always happy to be corrected and taught a new thing or 2 :)

It doesnt help when Pimp My Ride is saying that 130db is the equivilent of a Jet Idling on the tarmac.

That's pretty high DB, do you guys drive around with ear plugs or something? lol

They actually drive around with no ears.

Lol....

I guess some people totally missed that joke.

My 10inch Polk would be lucky to hit 125db, but the wife when she is angry... that is another story. I think she actually hit 183.9db to be precise ( again another joke ).

Woob, to put it simply you could just say sit inside a jet engine then start it up and see which one seems louder :P

I've hit low 130's in the old car, I think 132dB? with the twin pioneers in a prefab box.

Current car setup can sit on a constant 107dB with general playback, not sure what I could get it to peak at yet on a flat tone, haven't tried but its built for SQ anyway. Are you guys getting these figures with general music playback or flat tones?
