Hey guys im new to the forum.

My sister gave me her old 87 Magna for free and it was running pretty good for about 6 months.

I was wondering if you guys know a good place for a second hand engine for it (or where i can get it reconditioned) for cheap.

Its just extremely noisey, engine leaks, burns oil etc and just the other week it started getting even more noisey and has lost a **** load of power.

I live in WA. Can anyone help me out ? cause i dont wanna get ripped of.

I rang some place and they quoted me $1200 on a recon but that sounds a bit to expensive.

actually $1200 probly isnt too bad considering all the work they have to do to recon it

the question is there whether or not they do a good recon for that price

It's always a gamble when u get a reco eng, do they offer any kind of warranty, no warranty is probably a bad thing. At least three months i reckon.

Thanks for the replies :)

If its going to cost me $1200, i really dont think it would be worth it because the car isnt in very good shape.

The body work is fine but their is a few things going on it.

I was thinking if it would be cheaper to rebuild the engine my self. I am no mechanic, but when i had my old VB commodore, me and my brother inlaw rebuilt the V8 with just the workshop manual.

Im pretty sure its just the upper end of the engine that is stuffed.

You could try rebuilding the engine yourself, a gregorys manual will help.

Dont get me started on reconditioning engines

I've had the engine in and out of the car about 3-4 times... each time with another engine...

Here's my story:

Cheap reconditioning is nothing but headaches... and more money for parts that aren't needed

Damn thats a shame about your recon, i dont think i want to get it done at now lol. That thing with the VH that kept leaking was funny.

A few day ago i whent down to the wreskers to get my self an alternator and while i was their, i asked the guy if he knew some places where i can get my engine recond and he was saying that their are a few places but for $1470, he can put a TS engine in my car

Have you guys heard of this ?

No I havent heard of this although it sounds fairly cool. I have oil pressure problems in my TP and I cant decide between upgrading to a TE... or putting in a different engine and making it go faaast.

yeah, i have heard of a TR engine being put into a 1st gen. its pretty much a direct bolt in but i think u have to mod the left hand side engine mount. u also need the TR gearbox and ECU etc and im assuming the wiring loom aswell. i was thinking of doing this myself but opted for staying with my engine... i didn't have the $1500 to do the conversion. it would've costed abit more though i spose. include oil, modding engine mount, ecu etc, gearbox oil, coolant and a few other bits and pieces it wont b a TR engine for $1400. i havent heard of a TS engine being put in but im assuming (since its the same block as the TR and ours) it will also fit. the TS have a diff head on it too, not too sure if it has more valves or not? TS engine will b good though. definately go for that over reconditioning ur 1st gen engine :D
