Ok, Ill get my car back after the smash later this week, and it will take me a while to save up the cash for my sub and amp. A LONG while. which will in turn give me a while to do a complicated Sub-box.

The question is .... if i have a sub box say 2 feet wide and a hole in the back of it to the ski hole so the sound can come through loud and clear. will having the sub set off to one side of the box impair the sound quality in any serious way? and if i set the sub in the middle. where would be a good spot to mount the amp?

hmmmm... if your gonna b taking a while designing the box, i'd seriously read thru some how-to articles, espcially if your talking about putting a hole in the box (????) the sub placement isn't really a big issue, unless your a complete audiophile freak, if it is off to one side that leaves plenty of space on the side of the box to mount an amp, or the other option is on the back of the box, but as i said, depending on the skill u have, and the time, u could try an effort like UNDER8D has....

Unless you're building a ported box (doesn't sound like if it you are asking a simple question like this), sub positioning isn't an issue.

Well the idea is one ive had for a while, ever since i was told that a square kicker in the ski hole isnt a brilliant idea. UNDER8D's setup gave me a few solid ideas. When i get my car back ill do a dummy up with cardboard.

The "back" of the box would sit flush against the rear seats. the "front" would sit flush up against the front of the wheel wells and reach from the bottom of the boot to the top.
the back would have a hole that would be the same size as the ski hole . Id place a custom speaker grill in the ski hole, something pretty cool.

I dunno im Blueskying at the moment, when i get the car back ill take the measurements and figure it out then.

Dude, go here and download this software . It's really helpful.
Enclosure Calculator (http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32753)

You basically put in the specs of your sub, and it tells you to use either a sealed
enclosure (easy) :D or a ported enclosure (tricky) .

Your sub specs should also have a recommended enclosure volume. e.g 28 litres
Put in the dimensions of your proposed box into the calculator i.e HxWxL and it will tell you the volume. Play around with the dimensions until it equals the correct volume and
Voila, build your box  .

I've been researching this topic coz I'm planning a similar project, so here are some clues.
If you have a hole in the back of the box and the ski hole open, you'll get two sound waves.

The first one from the back of the box comes out straight away to your ears. The second one comes out of the front of the speaker, bounces off the back of the boot, back through the car to your ears. It's like standing next to someone who's shouting "coo-ee" at a mountain. You hear them, and then you hear the echo. It will sound ****e.

Some say remove the 6x9's and replace them with just grilles of some sort. This allows more bass into the cabin.

This enclosure design stuff is pretty precise. Do your research and you'll get heaps of ideas.
Hope this helps.

If all this is a crock of ****, someone will correct me.

Hmmm.....

so that sound rebound would be a bad thing....

Can anyone direct me to a RELIABLE site that really dumbs down the basics of car audio. I dont know anything about the rating of amp i need to drive a decent sub. I dont know about wether or not i should amp my 6x9's and such...

here this is all about that rebound thingy
it happens with all subs, but with that design it'll be a lot more pronounced...
http://www.teamrocs.com/technical/pages/aiming.htm
lots of diagrams, easy to understand
and check out Car Audio Australia's website, heaps o tech articles about sub boxes and everything else
if all else fails, search 'sub boxes' on google. Somethings gotta come up :)

I did some research. Im slowly beginning to understand...

Its complex... thats without a doubt...

I think ill build a basic wedge shaped box, with a clear rear plexi wall instead of a MDF wall, so i can mount the clear see through window into the ski hole and can show off my sub lit by some red cold cathodes.

Trust me... this system is going to be a nice looking setup, I want great sound quality above all else, but If i can get the great looking setup and the great sounding setup all in one... Im quite happy with that.
