Hey All,

I am having a really hard time removing the existing fuel filter on my Magna SE 'TR' 93

Aside from being in a difficult location against the fire wall adjacent to the clutch master cylinder i am finding that the top and bottom nuts wont budge!

I saw that i need to wrench the nut connection of the filter (the one thats part of the filter body) and wrench the top nut that is part of the "banjo" fitting.

Can any one advise if i need a special tool to do this for Magna 2nd gens?

Ive released the fuel pressure and disconnected battery and clamped the top fuel line connection to the fuel rail (for obvious safety precaution). The bottom fuel line is metal (aluminum i think) and i dont want to break this because it would cost to fix it.

I spent a good 3/4 hour trying to get this disconnected. The filter is old and looks to be the one that came with the car (now nearly 17 years old!)

Any help offered is appreciated as fule economy is bad at moment and this and the cat converter are the two parts i know need renewing in order to improve economy and performance.

Thanks

The fuel filter won't affect fuel consumption. It will stop the engine from running if it is totally blocked, which is unlikely. I did mine last year (TS, probably original) using open ended spanners, when gearbox was off the car. Hold the hex shape on the bottom of the filter with one spanner and use another spanner on the fuel line nut. If you get the bottom undone disconnect the hose from the fuel rail and take it out with the top hose still attached. Then transfer the hose to the new filter. Like you said access is a problem.

the lines are steel, and i have invested in a set of pipe spanners
also perhaps a little wd40 and patience is in order

Doug - done this a few times now and learnt a few things.
Hold the bottom one with an open end 17mm (normal spanner)
and crack the top nut with that 17mm flare nut spanner. once it's cracked, you'll be sweet. The filter is on a bracket attached to the firewall with rubber bushing's so there will be a bit of flex when you put some pressure on it.

Do it like that and you will be right :)

Yes, use a spanner on the hex on the fuel filter body and place another spanner on the pipe fitting so they lie about 1" apart. Then squeeze the two together with your hands. Works to crack the fitting every time.
