View Full Version : Strange whirring/humming noise

Hello fellow AMC colleagues,
I have noticed a slight whirring/humming noise coming from the rear of the car. The noise is more noticeable when the car is fully loaded and around 100kph. My first thoughts would be wheel bearings, but would there be anything else that would be making a noise like this?
Thanks for your help,
Braedz

You need to get up close and personal with your car's rear end to isolate the problem. Could be anything from a brake pad chattering to a stick caught in the exhaust system.

Good point Madmax, I will have a look under my car tonight to see if there is anything caught anywhere. Its just weird that the noise appears when there is extra weight in the car?

Might just be the resonant frequency of the rear tyres, after they have worn a bit, at 100 km/h with a load in the back.
I've found that every one of the last six or seven sets of tyres I have had have changed noise as they wear, and in nearly all cases have gotten louder and/or rumblier and/or a bit of a hum has developed.
Also check for uneven tread wear on the rears, possibly caused by too much negative camber.

Fuel pump?

Yes, his car has a fuel pump. So does mine. They never make any noise than can be heard at 100 kph though. Perhaps there are bits of gravel stuck in the tyre tread, my tyres often make funny "bearing like" noises because of this.

Agree with this. One set of Falkens I had really annoyed me but had plenty of residual tread. Just had to wait til they wore out. Latest set have been very good.
If you swap back tyres to front that might give you an idea.

There are plenty of cars that the in tank pump can be heard running in.
For a 380 I recommend sitting in the back passenger side, then it will be right under your butt.

How many ks have you done SMK380? I have done around 110000km, surely the bearings wouldn't be due for replacement yet?

does the noise change frequency when you move the steering wheel??
I know mine does

Kj380 was right, the Tyres I was using were causing the humming noise. Once I put new Tyres on, the noise went away
