well last weekend i finally got my car back on the road after fitting the new motor, also fitted a new clutch when i had the motor out well anyways my question is when i got it back to together the gearbox felt abit notchy, and was a pain to get into 5th gear, well last night i pulled the selector cables off and had a look just to make sure nothing was jamming or stopping them form moving so put it back together the same way it was and now Ive lost 1st, 3rd and 5th gear, only have 2, 4 and reverse, anyone got any ideas? I fitted new box oil when i did the change, i had the metal bracket off the top of the selectors when i decreased the box and im 99% sure i put it back together the same way..

Suggestions would be great...

Something tells me the shifter cable isnt moving the fork, can you verify with someone in the car when you move the shifter the cable is actually moving the selector on the gearbox?

If the shifter cable is snapped inside you will need to replace it. Are you sure you didn't just get them mixed up? I did this accidentally haha messed with my H pattern. Got in the car I'm like "This aint right!".

Have you actually put the selector cables on the right way round, There is two. Is it possible to put the wrong cable on the selector.? Are they the same size fittings..?

They could go on back to front

Best thing to do is have someone in the car to move the shifter and have a look in the engine bay to see what is happening there, may be the cable is not clipped correctly, this will cause both the notchy feel and if has come off will prevent those gears, notice that they are all the gears when you move the shifter forward, the cable sounds like it is moving on the clip

Check too that one of the rubber inserts in the eye of the cable hasn't dropped out.
