View Full Version : TE fast idle, slow to warm up & going thru coolant daily

A few weeks ago I noticed my TE had began to take ages to warm up, high idle but not rough. As in even after a few minutes to warm up and finally driving off, it's taking 5-mins of driving before the temp needle finally moves and the engine is reving the whole time. Since this all began I've also noticed the engine is getting extremely hot after running even for a 15-min drive to work and I am going through radiator coolant/water on a daily basis. The revs when driving seem to be higher under acceleration at take offs, the heater takes ages to give off any heat and then only when driving, when idle at the lights it seems to blow cooler air. Also temp gage goes up if I've been on the road for a while and comes down when idle, with or without added coolant, yet the heater will still give only warmer air when driivng, not when idle.

Any ideas of what's happening? Am hoping to get it in to be looked at and fixed this week, but want an idea of what may be going on before I do.

I would say from what you are describing that the loss of coolant may be related to the slow to warm up initially and then the further problem of overheating later as there is not enough in the system to warm up the fast idle circuit and the temp sender

If you want to book in, I can do a full pressure test of the cooling system and find out where the leak is, you may have issues with a thermostat being stuck closed, thus pressure builds up in the system and there is no flow and the coolant is being blown out of your over flow either way a pressure test will tell us if you have a leak and if not then we start looking in other areas such as a stuck thermostat

I had wanted to go for a long drive over the weekend but didn't want to risk it. I'll book her in this week.

Please check for air in the cooling system

or a stuck thermostat (closed).
