View Full Version : Where to get power steering rack remanufactured in QLD or any other place?

Due to my mechanic's busy schedule and his forgetfulness, the installation of 380 heads and TL AWD ps rack only started this morning! Bloody car was sitting at his place all week doing nothing!
Ok to make it short, he advised me that the seal on top of the TL AWD ps rack is stuffed/rooted and is leaking badly or leaking for a long while now.
So no go at the install as it would be dangerous and might make it unroadworthy. Wasted my 3 months chasing my mechanic for an install date/time!
Since I got it from Imlachs, I called them about a warranty replacement/swap or repair. The guy who sold me the ps rack told me he will have to check with his manager as warranty don't cover seals but the ps rack might be a unique situation. I am still waiting on a call back from Imlachs which will be unlikely today.
It costs just as much, if not more than the amount to purchase the ps rack from Imlachs, to remanufacture the ps rack. Anyone knows of a place in QLD or anywhere else that is reliable and can remanufacture the ps rack?
I would first hit Imlachs for another rack - read their warranty: http://www.imlachs.com.au/common/I/imlachscomau/images/Brochure%20-%20Benefits%20of%20Parts%20Re-use.pdf
The part is not "fit for service".
If it's just the pinion seal gone on the rack it may not cost much to replace especially as the rack is on the bench - just look in the yellow pages for "steering"
Good Luck.

There's a few minor differences with the 75 heads compared to the 74 ones. One of the holes that the sprintex kit bolts into doesn't appear to be there on the 75 heads... Unless mine is the odd one out. Sorry for going off topic there...

Oh my god! Damn, i wouldn't have thought so. Might have to work something out or sell the kit i suppose.... :(
Should have just swapped the cams then... :(

I think it's the pinion seal that is a goner. Mechanic did mention something but i didn't catch it as i was at work. Only thing i remember was it is a seal on the top.
However, with the stuffed pinion seal the rack is not "fit for service" as it is part of the ps rack and should be intact for it to work. I'm more than happy for them to exchange, replace or repair. Refund will be the last option
So now I need to work out my options.

Don't sell it just drill & tap a new bolt hole ...... or ...... get a 380 Sprintex S5 & manifold :)

Image 1- Where to look in your car.
Image 2- Where the the threaded hole should be. On the 380 heads there's a little dip in the head compared to a threaded hole on the 6g74. (I don't have the hole there cause I've done a 6g75 conversion same boat as you)
Image 3- The sprintex L bracket and the itty little bit that bolts into the bottom on the L bracket and then to the rear engine head.
Not too sure about drilling a hole and tapping. My guess is to make a bracket or something that'll support the blower and manifold. Leaving that bolt out will stress the rest of the kit as I' guessing it's there for lateral support. I'm looking at the S5 kit atm. But I'm chasing the install manual for it if anyone is able to make a copy or email me a pdf of it. I'm worried the ECU it will need feeds from the fly by wire throttle-body or other 380 specific gear (MAP sensor?)

Don't think its that easy mate. There are bound to be items from the 380 Sprintex S5 that will not work on the Gen3s.

Ok I got good news from Imlachs. They are going to replace the TL AWD ps rack they sold me with a rooted pinion seal with another TL AWD ps rack that they have in stock. The guy checked and made sure the pinion seal on the replacement is not stuffed.
They will be sending the replacement out to my workplace and have the delivery guy pick up the old one.
Sweet~

Ok I got the replace TL AWD ps rack from Imlachs. The box is all saturated on one side with fluid. Looks like it is leaking too!
Just a quick check with you guys. Will turning the ps rack upside down cause it to leak fluid?

if the rack has oil in it, and the holes are not pluged during transport it will leak,
I know zilch about Magna racks, but I do know that any wrecker worth his/her salt will never freight a rack which still has oil in it - if they do, and the oil damages other freight then they are liable for a lot of $$$$ in compensation. However, first I'd see what your mechanic thinks.
