Hey guys,
Had a look at a '89 318i beamer today, and the tappet rubbers are gone according to the owner.
It is a distinctive noise every revolution, and it isnt really liveable with :P
Does this damage anything else?
Also, how hard would it be to fix/how much?
Any help would be great...
Cheers

Is there a mechanic near you, and can you take the car to have a once-over by a mechanic before you buy it? I have the number of a guy near para hills who should be able to, except its a little far from you.

Its right in victor, so probably not :P
I am thinking I might not get it due to the noise, but I could be missing out on something alright

well he says it will only cost $100 to fix it, so give him $100 extra over what he is asking and tell him to sort it for you :)

"'89 318i beamer . . . and the tappet rubbers are gone"

21 year old Beemer with a noisy engine? My advice? Walk away, no, better still, run away! It will be a bottomless pit for your money if you buy it! What is a "tappet rubber" anyway?

So why hasn't he bothered? A BMW with a quiet engine is easier to sell for a good price. I bet the story will change very suddenly!

Just Googled "bmw hydraulic tappet rubbers" and got no responses - the engine has chain drive cams and rubber insulators under the headbolts, noise may be coming from the chain or head.

I know they are not similar, but my mivec engine has two piece tappets , cup and ball style with a plastic collar to stop tapping between the two at normal clearanance. maybe the BMW engine runs a similar two piece tappet? just a guess

No matter what noise or what they are... As MadMax said, It's a 21 year old car. I think that there is enough to walk away. Unless you're looking at restoring it back to as-new specifications then well I guess you wouldn't have worried about the tappets and started this thread!
