Does anyone know what a going rate to recondition 3rg gen heads is, all the usual things like, stem seals, valve seats & so on. Im not talking about porting or shaving.... Also can any one recommend a place in Sydney.
Cheers

I cant really help you out with most of your questions but, for instance, I had an old 2.6 head I wanted R n R'd which is basically a strip down and rebuild with checking things like valves and all that and cost me $100 for the job as nothing was wrong. I would go directly to an engine re-con shop for your cheapest price as opposed to going to main stream commercial mechanics as there is usually a % chucked ontop. Also taking the heads off your self will help lower the cost rather than driving there and leaving the car with them.

Hunter here in SA charged me $866 for doing a pair of gen 2 heads. New exhaust valves, seats recut, new hydraulic lifters, bronze exhaust valve guide inserts, pressure tested. $120 for a US sourced gasket set, included valve stem seals. Removed, dismantled heads, assembled heads and put them back on myself. Gen 3 heads may need different work, and costs of parts may differ. Any competent machine shop can do it.
Take the heads in, dismantled, with the valves, cams and rockers, as well as valve springs etc if you want them to assemble the heads. Tell them what YOU think needs doing, and ask them to ring you if they find anything else that needs doing.
Figure about $1K for the job, or $2K if you get a mechanic to do it all. Lots of labour time in this job.
