View Full Version : Verada random gear change

Ok I've spent hours pouring over various older threads, but wanted to rehash and confirm.

My 92 KR verada changes its gears at random, one moment I'm in 4th, then I'm in 2nd, then back to 4th again then it'll be down into 3rd, and in between all that I get random rpm shifts.

This is describing just 10 seconds worth of driving!

I've had it at my local mechanic who cannot find the problem. he's also tested the cpu with no faults present, and taken some fluid out of the transmission as it was too high. he also adjusted the base idle.

He believes it may be computer related, but cant be certain as the symptoms dont always occur.

So far looking through older threads I have found various solutions: I should do a thorough transmission flush at a mitsu dealer and see what comes out, and hope that fixes the problem without going for a complete tranny rebuild or replacement (which is costly I see), to changing the idle control switch and replacing fuses in the footwell.

Suggestions?

Chris

Sounds like a Faulty TPS unit. trans gets a signal off your Throttle position sensor, if its faulty, it'll send it crazy signals and the trans will jump all over the joint.
$5 part from the wreckers. can be tested with a multimeter

God hope thats the problem, as rebuild will cost more than I paid for the whole verada! So I hope its just a Throttle Position Switch...

Cant hurt to try. And dont bother with a "rebuild" Just get another gearbox from the wreckers for $100, install it (half day job) and carry on. No point at all getting a 2nd gen auto rebuilt. Dime a dozen at the wreckers

Gearbox/transmission is the same in an auto? I feel stupid asking that question.

Yeah well the car is 18 years old so I expect it to have problems. but I'll try your suggestion first as its easier and more cost effective.

My old TN magna Elite, I could fix most problems with a screwdriver and a pair of scissors, my Verada is a different apple.

Sorry, should of said transmission
(gearbox = manual, transmission = automatic)
2nd gen's are fairly easy to work on......minimal electronics compared to car's these days.

Yeah Tuff I look at modern engines and think playing chess would be easier, if I played chess..

cberry, seems that it is, and hopefully thats the only thing, I've already replaced most of the electricals in it since I bought it 3 years ago.

Although, since replacing the overdrive unit 18months ago the downshift has been rather heavy when stopping quickly as opposed to suddenly..

Thanks guys for your advice and feedback

I have no history on my 4sp Automatic in the Diamante but it had a very harsh downshifting after an extended period in O/D

Replaced the fluid, has not happened since. Give that a whirl.

Although If transmissions go half price at your local pick a part, I'd be grabbing one as a spare. Then if one day it just happens to go on you, your not left high and dry, these transmissions are not how do you say.....the best...

Tuff wasa referring to wreckers, and probably self-serve joints at that. Are you pricing new part or from a wreckers? If you have a self-serve wrecker near you, they may be cheaper.......

Hey Phil,
for a new tps I was quoted $130, the $66.00 was from a wrecker yes, but not a self-serve joint as there's not one of them around Newcastle unfortunately

"Tell 'em they're dreaming!"

Seriously, depending on how quickly you need it, someone here should be able to hook you up. I'd offer but looking after a newborn and probably couldn't get to the wreckers for a couple of weeks.

Might be worthwhile looking up wreckers a bit further afield, the cost of a few more k's in driving could prove worthwhile.

Hehe Rogue, well thankyou I appreciate the sentiment, and hope the newborn doesn't keep you up too much :)

Well rego runs out in 5 days but I do have another car I can use in the mean time which only has a flat tyre and is embarrassing to drive :P

There's a pick n payless in Sydney that I usually go to for parts, they're pretty cheap, although 5-6 hour round trip so maybe I'll make myself a list and see if its worthwhile.
