Well, as the title says, how do I go about this? No amount of tugging/ pulling looks like it's going to get this mirror off. Obviously there's a trick to it. Anyone let me in on how they removed theirs?

Thanks.

the chromatic mirror has an allen key screw where it attaches to the windscreen take it completely out and it should wiggle free

Thanks for the swift reply. Am I looking at the top for the said allen key?

On the third gen Chromatic mirror there is no allen screw, may be on the Diamante ones, not sure to be honest

There is a spring clip behind the mirror, then the bracket is tapered, you need to VERY carefully push in the clip and then push the mirror assy up towards the roof lining. Sometimes they come off quite easilly but often they are a bugger and many have cracked screens taking them off.

If you have another third gen mirror there to look at, the mounting is identical in respect to how they mount.

ALso be careful that you do not put too much pressure on the mirror as you can easily make the bracket come lose in the alloy housing and it may rattle after that

Another way is to have 2 people, one pressing on the clip and another to gently tap with a plastic hammer upwards to release the mirror

Thanks Mal.

Yeah, I maybe I didn't explain correctly. I'm trying to swap in a KJ2 chromatic into my TJ. They have the same backing & I'm struggling to remove the TJ one. I see that the seller of the KJ one obviously had the same issue as it's still got a bit of windscreen stuck to it. lol. I can't remove that either, without damaging it. Any ideas on how to clean that off?

I think I'll just sell it on as I've wasted too much time on it now & I'm over it.

I have been known to take a small-ish straight-bladed screwdriver and poke it upwards from the underside of the black mounting...
.... get the blade between the springy clip (which is part of the black mirror mounting plate) and the metallic colour "disc" which is glued to the windscreen.

AS Mal has explained, if you think you have the springy clip in the black part disengaged from the metal "disc" - push upwards to slide the mirror and mounting up the glass towards hood lining.

By implication, remove the plastic cover from on top the power wires first!! (This would prevent you moving the mirror's mounting block in the direction required.

IF you get free-play in the mounting - where the rivets of alloy have loosened on a metal bracket which is inside the mounting plate, you can "recondition" by careful use of a punch to spread the alloy and tighten the rivet. I have only recently done this, and also tried to squish hot-glue around the back of the bracket to prevent future movement and loosesning of the rivets. Fingers crossed, its working).

I think I'm at the point of smashing the windscreen though, now. lol Too fiddly for me & it was just a luxury item that I don't really want/ need in the TJ. (No windscreen cover either!!)

Thanks for your help, but I'm pretty sure I'll sell it on & leave someone else figure out how to do it.

Al, Dont despair it can be one.

Two things first...if your new chromatic mirror has the metal "tag" that is normally attached to the windscreen, this can be removed easily with the use of two small flat head screw drivers...
1. Position the mirror on a table mirror side face down on a blanket to protect it
2. Re-align the mirror stalk so its upright, not on an angle, you'll see why next step
3. With one screw driver push down on the clip, hard, just enough to make a 0.5 to 1 mm gap.
4. with the other screw driver insert on the opposite side gap between the "tag" and the mirror's meta chasis, and twist, the tag will slide off

Now how do you get the one off the car...
1. You can apply Mal's method but, you also risk cracking the windscreen...the importatnt thing is to put lateral force along the window not outwards.
2. My method is different, it destroys the tag on the original TJ mirror...no big deal.
3. The clip at the mirrors oppening look like two "buck Teeth", they are made up of a "u" bend. Use a dremel and grind these away so that the clip is broken into two
4. Without any resistance offered by the clip you can then push the mirror upwards towards the roof and it will come off.

Replace with the new mirror and your done.

If you need further explanation or pictures let me know...

Cheers,
Bill

Mal is right most 3rd gen mirrors are clipped on. i deleted all my posts but what I did was put masking tape all around on the windscreen and hacksaw across the base. there was no way it would come out without damaging the windscreen case the clip is made of high-tensile steel. the 380 chrmatic mirror is the updated version and has an allen key and will fit a 3rd gen.

I bought one the same with windscreen still in it (with the metal clip normally attached to the windscreen still in the holder).

After smashing the bit of glass and removing the clip in the mirror mount, you will learn how it goes on. Its a pain in the arse to take off, but I succeeded inside of 10 mins with a flat tip screwdriver, swearing, and hitting the existing TJ mirror upwards.

Like you, I wanted a chromatic mirror in the TJ.

Stick with it mate its a very very useful mod. Even a saftey upgrade it could be said.

Just went to plug mine in but I can't see any vacant plugs under the drivers side. Can someone post a pic of the plug or tell me what to unplug please? The car is a TJ S2.

Cheers Mal, found it. But now I have no interior light. Do I just swap the pins into the new plug?

My one and only tip is add no windscreen excess cover before you begin. I can give you a hand with this when I'm down your way soon if you like, Onky and I changed mine not too long ago.
