View Full Version : Full exhaust system quote - thoughts?
What do people think of these prices, also includes labour per fitment of each item.
We use pacemaker extractors $660.00 100cpi stainless substrate hi flow cat
$300 and 2.5" cat back system including large rear muffler $460.00.
all up = $1420. I asked them about the 100cpi cat as there are legalities for this when fitted to non euro-4 capable cars.
Dont need rear muffler changed if you've already got the Sports/VRX muffler. Get a 200cpi SS cat if you are uneasy with the 100cpi.
You also don't need to change the rear piping which is already close to 2.5".
So, all you really need is a set of extractors and a 200CPI cat.
When I got a 100CPI fitted, the exhaust smelled bad. I then returned it and swapped for a $200CPI cat. Still smells a little but not as bad as the 100CPI.
I got a set of HM Headers for approx $400 off eBay and paid $100 to get it fitted so $660 for pacies fitted sound about right.
Those HMs are back to about $600 or 640 a set now, even by the same ebay seller - the good price was late last year iirc.
The $300 cat sounds expensive to me.
I just replaced my exhaust from the rear axle flange joint back. A Lukey LR2779 + pipe $265, and a shiny twin outlet for $85 ($345 total). Work done by Carline in Seven Hills.
Midas Blacktown quoted $480 for a redback/custom cat back with sports muffler.
So I'd personally question the price on the cat, but everything else seems within normal range.
IMO - visit a HSV forum and grab a cat from a reasonbly new 5.7 LS engined HSV that's getting an upgraded exhaust. Offer the guy $50 and you'll certainly have more flow than a Magna's cat. (unless the HSV has twin cats, then it might not be a smart idea :)

Hey Dave,
I'll have a straight through muffler available very soon.
I bought a full exhaust system which came with one so the Lukey LR2779 I've got on now will be taken off.
Hey great replies, thanks guys. My muffler is practically dead as it has a giant rusty hole in it. Dingers, i will take the lukey off u for sure, including tip? $$
Regarding pacies and cat i will ask them about a 200cpi cat for cost
Oh yeah the pipework is custom mandrel bent with redback muffler

Yeah it'll include the tip as the VRX rear bar is circular, damn shame since I love the oval.
I just gotta do some tests with my other muffler and see if it's louder than my Lukey.
If so, I'll keep the other muffler, if not I'll keep the Lukey and sell the other muffler.
The spare one is a brand called Perry, also known as HM Headers.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to swap it over and do a dB test soon.
Also gotta double check with TJTime as he might've wanted the muffler first.

Na, dont worry about it dude, I'm getting Owen's old Exhaust setup!
I'm just wondering what its gonna cost to get my extractors fitted up. Personally, I'm not worrying about the catalytic converter, as I've been told by quite a few people that there isnt much difference between a highflow and the stock equivalent.

Fitting headers should be about $100 as I mentioned before. Takes about 1 hour total. You are right that there isn't much difference in flow rate between a stock and 200cpi unless you heavily modify your car. However, stock ceramic cats tend not to last as long and when the substrate fail/collapse, will cause blockage.

Ahh right! I notice you "Just got SKRd on 95!", what sort of mods do you have, and what power are you pumping out?
I'd really only upgrade my cat if it died, and even then, with something cheap...
just going with the muffler. Just cant justify spending that much on it when i am still living at home with the rents lol

Just Do It!
Then 380 cams and tune!!

What, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390239366718 ????
I think that's a redback cat-back exhaust. Price is currently $355 from Melbourne. I shipped a set of 4 cyl extractors through aus post for $13 from SA to NSW, so a cat back might $26 in two pieces? Unless the muffler is heavy :)
In fact, have a look at ebay - Wildcat headers for a 3.5L for $490.
Redback headers for $498
Pacemaker headers $517.39.
all of those ebay items are from Vic, so factor in postage, but sounds cheaper than $660.
But then for the $100 saving, you've got to do the running around and wait for delivery and hope that everything fits.
If you buy it all from one shop and they've given you a quote, at least you should be set and have no hassles.
hmm, $355 + $490 + $55 postage estimate = $900. That would leave $520 for installation.
edit: Oops, I forgot about the cat. Thanks to Alscall redoing the sums, it means you've only got about $300 left for installation costs - so the price the shop gave you still seems good.

Oggy's right. Ebay is your friend here, Dave.
Magnaflow 2.5" highflow cat/ 3" highflow cat: $200 plus $24 shipping
Pacemaker Headers : $517.39 plus ? shipping
Redback Catback : $355 plus ? shipping
Total: $1096 + (~$50 for unquoted postage costs)
SO by the time they charge for fitting etc, you'll be roughly where you're at now. You could of course fit the catback plus the headers yourself & leave yourself only the cost of having the cat fitted. (It'll come without flanges etc which will need to be welded on.)

I presume this is directed towards me. The tune was done prior to the cat install. However, the cat would not have added that much. Bear in mind that mine is an AWD so AWKW is much less then FWKW. However, the torque increase was very much appreciated. The torque peaked at 500rpm less and was much more and lasted longer then original. So net result is a broader and higher torque available from 500rpm lower in the rev range. Can really feel it at 2000rpm thanks to the headers as well. I may in the future chuck in the 380 cams and get it tuned to 98.

So from the feedback I have heard, for performance a High flow cat is fairly pointless but headers improve a fait bit. Also, stock pipework is fairly free flowing as well. From the look of it, extractors and straight-through muffler are the way to go and just leave the rest as is.
Bang for buck - the Lukey LR2779 muffler wins. It should be good for 5 to 9 flywheel kW over a restrictive executive style muffler.
I personally don't know if the extractors will return a significant gain.
To make an engine more powerful, you make it more efficient or make it burn more fuel + air. Or both for the big gains. So think about what is most restrictive and improve that. If the factory exhaust manifolds are restrictive then extractors should help a lot.
I'm going to work on my air intake next as I've removed the snorkel for the induction noise :), but the weather is starting to heat up and cooler intake temps will be important.

apples and oranges but i just had: extractors installed supplied by me, mufflers installed x2 supplied by me, 2.5 stainless piping mandrel bent system with dual from axle back also stainless and a highflow cat (200cpi) purchased from shop. that cost me 1850.

Yeah i already have a high flow muffler very similar to lukey. Wouldnt mind a magnaflow, they sound hot as

Ooft... Hate to say it but I got Pacemaker Extractors, 2.5 mandrel bent piping, centre muffler replaced with a hot dog, and a straight through Perry rear muffler for the sum of...
$100.
Although, I did have to buy a manual conversion kit with 2 3.0l gearboxes and a $600 lightened flywheel all for $700 to get that deal lol
Also have a high flow cat sitting in my room which I will install along with everything else.
