I've been through the process of fixing a Mitsu that was backed into a pole. If you go for new bits the all up cost of $4K is quite reasonable, Mitsu charge a lot for a bare tailgate with glass. If the tailgate glass is not broken you may be able to fix it, or look for one at the wreckers. You need to remove the interior trim off the tailgate, undo the wiring connectors and pull it out of the tailgate. Undo the struts, 4 nuts and it comes off, but it is a 2 man job if you want to do it safely. Usually if the bumper is pushed in, the bodywork below the tailgate will be pushed in too, the cheapest way is to hammer/pull it straight, and bog it up. Of course, if the hit was hard enough to crinkle the quarter panels or roof, the car is a write off. Replace the tailgate and make everything line up. (Major pain this is). Another bumper from a wreckers and you are good to go. I would repaint any bits (bumper, tailgate) before installing on the car, but you may be happy with a multi-coloured car.
A repairer would use all new panels, because that way he saves on labour and has a better chance of getting the job looking reasonable. If you can't do the work yourself, fork out the $4K or look for another car. Sorry, life can be harsh sometimes when we make a simple mistake.

id goto wreckers and try to get a bumper with reo in the same colour as your car, and the gate the same colour as your car, and find a decent panel beater that could spend a couple of hours if needed to pull the bever panel out , might jsut need a bit of wood and a hammer, if u were in sydney i could help
