In total for memory there are 3 or 4 screws and bolts - i took mine off when i lowered it mainly due to they scraped on EVERYTHING!!
basically - when you pull them off there will be a black sticky residue / glue stuff - just get a cloth and buff it off - bit of elbow grease and it comes off ;)
also - remember without the mudgaurds on you will end up with more muck schlicked up the side of your car - but if you keep your car clean this won't be an issue - mainly brake dust and road grime.
Oh - if any one wants a set of mudgaurds for their 3rd gen - i have a complete set with all the mounted screws / bolts sitting at home - only travelled about 70K km's ;) hahaha make me an offer!!

yep, pretty easy to remove and unless you drive in the mud all the time, they aren't that useful.
There's heaps of other things you should take off too in your car. hehe. what for i hear? well, there's something you could take off or cut off to help your front brakes to cool quicker. just think about it hey.

I've taken mine off too. To get a screw driver to the screws I had to turn the wheels one way then drive forward a foot and turn them the other way :)

Yeah - they are there to get removed ;)
They serve a purpose - but you weigh up the risks - like anything you do to any car.
You just have to balance up the risks - either scrape your mudgaurds all the time - or don't and risk getting a rock hit the under side of your car.

I reckon they look better WITH mudflaps :)
And besides I'd never consider taking them off coz i do travel on dirt roads - actually speaking of which i'm looking for a new full set because they're all blasted and broken away due to rocks.
How much you looking for manual?

I say go flapless. I took my mudflaps off when I lowered my car, and in my opinion it looks better with out them, although obviously you lose the practicality of having mudflaps, being that they stop small rocks etc flicking up and chipping ur paint, bu tno chips so far  .
