View Full Version : potential warning of front camber bolt kit????
Hi guys, has anyone heard about problems with the Whiteline front camber kit - the bolt with a lobe in it?
I was just reading an autospeed article and in it he was worried about the strength of this item and did suffer a failure in a Toyota Prius.
Do Magna owners with this kit need to be worried? Does anyone know of failures?
Here's the autospeed link: http://autospeed.com/cms/A_111691/article.html
Cheers!

i was advised not to use 2 of them. I was told to replace the top one with the camber bolt and use the standard hi tensile for the bottom hub bolt hole.
I doubt once tightened corectly they are any less likely to break then the standard bolt but if there is any slack (because they are loose) they will shear pretty easy IMHO. Both my hubs are such a tight fit in the bottom strut mounting that i have to use a mallet to get them to allign anyways. the cars weight doesnt sit on the bolt shafts (unless they are loose) it is distributed to the whole hub mount. BUT there is room to error. THey come loose on my brothers magna after a wheel allignment.

I have pulled out several broken ones over the years, when a customer comes here for suspension, if I notice them before taking out the strut or doing other similar work, I will advise that i am not willing to re install these due to the fact that they are not the designed bolt, they are much thinner and tend to strip also.
I have turned away a few jobs in the past as I will not touch these, am happy to remove them and replace with standard bolts but will not re install them

i had them fit to the TH for 3 year without issue and now on a TW for 1 year without issues
you have 1 camber bolt and 1 stock bolt in each side

I had the Whiteline bolt kit for quite a few years before I went to adjustable strut tops. No problems to report. As well as street kms they copped several outings of track abuse. My guess is breakages are due to incorrect installation of the kit - mine was fitted by MRT who work closely with Whiteline.

Had my fitted four about 2 years now, so far no problems....

A lot of these after market kits are like this, on the surface a good design idea to help the enthusiastic car owner, but lacking in materials strength or consistency or on road testing. Whereas a car manufacturer will literally do thousands of hours of testing on suspension designs to test for reliability, the after market kit makers seem to do very little testing and it is on the purchaser's shoulders to wear the consequences of poor materials selection and design. Good on Madmagna to have the knowledge to see the potential consequences of these and refusing to have anything to do with them. I'm with him on that point.
PS Blaming "incorrect installation" for failure is just blame shifting. Any after market kit should come with clear illustrated instructions and be designed to be "idiot proof". If it isn't, it needs further development.

lol You already have stock bolts on your car. They don't work with a camber kit, the thinner bolt with the eccentric cam on it is what does the work of allowing the camber to change. My advice is to send the kit back, or put it in a cupboard somewhere. Or use one standard bolt in the bottom fitting and a camber adjuster bolt in the top, as suggested above.

the whole reason i bought the camber bolt set was because i was told my front left wheel camber was out more than my front right wheel. Jax said they're charge 180 to fix it, or i could buy my own and they could fix it with a 4 wheel alignment for 60...

yes this will fix your problem

So... you can get adjustable strut tops for ~$400 that can adjust front camber and castor, question is, is the bolts option the only option to correct rear camber?

the camber bolts are for the fronts only

So if you used the camber bolt only in the top, what range of adjustment could you achieve?

the whiteline kit only comes with 2 bolts, 1 for each side
so it will give full adjustment

I could get a max of about -1.7 deg camber with the Whiteline kit on my car, so that gives you a rough ballpark.

Fair enough. I was thinking both bolts were replaced. Do the whiteline bolts have a marking on the head to denote their tensile strength?

FYI, rear camber is by adding spacers and replacing a standard bolt with a longer one. Someone posted up (or resurrected) a DIY on it within the last week with great photos.
Cheers.
