View Full Version : how long does it take to change a head over
with the recent issues with my car it looks like it does indeed have a blown head gasket / blown head.
was just wondering if someone could tell me how long it takes to change a head with new gasket over and what other thngs i might need ( rocket gasket, new oil filter / oil, etc) when doing it.
also is anyone out there able to post me a pic on how to tell what to look for for a m9 head, and would the m9 even fit onto my 92 tr 4cyl just heard they are much better
btw still looking at selling and buying a thuird gen im just going through the motion of trying to get something organise asap

Done this several times on earlier pre-magna Mitsus. Never timed myself, but the process is:
Do the rounds of the wreckers until you find a head.
Buy it.
Strip it down .
Take to machine shop for checking, valve seats cut, refaced is minimum work needed.
Reassemble.
Buy VRS gasket set. Buy oil, filter, coolant.
Clean engine.
Pull old head off.
Put new head on.
Discover you are short some tools and go buy them.
Clean hands.
Go for drive.
Put old head in shed.
Honestly, it takes a week or two. Couple of hours work a day, several days of just waiting for the machine shop to do its thing.
It helps to have a spare car or two in the family in the meantime. lol

M9 head has kidney shaped combustion chamber, fits onto any 2.6 L EFI engine I believe. "M9" is cast into the cylinder head as raised letter/number, on the outside at the front, between 2 of the spark plugs. Easy to miss if the head is dirty. Any head would do, just look for a TS with low Km. If you get one with 200,000 Km or more on it, as most of the TSs at my local wreckers are, expect to pay quite a bit to get it worked on to get it into good condition.
